MARK HULYER

edited September 2011 in General Charlton

Is 66 this year. Doesn't appear to be a company director anywhere and has been involved with a few dissolved companies.

Anyone know how he is and what is he up to?

  • Is he one of the mysterons?
  • Never heard of him.
  • Spent a few years inside, used to drink in the bugle before home games when we first went back to The Valley. Haven't seen him for many years.
  • I remenber him could be wrong but he took CHARLTON to the brink off going out off buisness .I think he bought siminson but could be wrong .
  • Yes,his acquisition of Simonsen was one of the biggest ego trips (perhaps the biggest) in our history, another being his buying the club in the first place. It was his company's name , Marman, that used to adorn the old West Stand. Last heard of heading up the Limpopo river looking for a missing boatload of rubber !
  • March51 i remember the boat thing but i got to say simonson was à great player blimey it take you back to the bad days.
  • Yes, seeing him play for us was the only good thing to happen at that time, a great player but the hoped for crowds didn't turn up and the deal drove us towards bankruptcy.
  • He was without doubt the worst thing that ever happened to our club. Full of swank, wank, false promises, false companies, hidden debts and trying to spend beyond his own means, the banks means and CAFC means.
Correct if I am wrong but Hulyer started us on the slippery slope with separating the club from the Valley in his deals with Glikstein which eventually led us to bankruptcy and no Valley.
I hate the man for what he done but i don't wish him ill but he is NOT on my Christmas card list and if i knew his address I would send him a bouncing cheque for the fun of it. Take that !!!!

  • March51 thay were bad days i started surporting CHARLTON when thay were in the old third division 35 years latter im back there but i would not have it any other way thats real football you never leave your team un like these glory hunters .

  • Hulyer=Goldberg
  • Not quite right: it was Gliksten who wanted to sell the club but keep the ground. He (Gliksten) then later said he wanted part of the Valley to use for his timber business. Both events were the start of the whole sorry mess.

I think it was Gliksten who separated the club from the ground, selling the club to Hulyer but retaining the ground, I wonder why he did that...

    .
  • Took a huge gamble that Simenson would increase our crowds so much that the deal would be viable. Didnt happen and he ended up trying to persuade a High Court judge to suspend a winding up order on the basis that he was expecting a boat load of rubber to arrive.

Heart in the right place, head not unfortunately. Didnt he bring a nigerian tribal chief onto the board?
  • A great great player of immense talent, unfortunately he was thinking about 5 minutes ahead of the rest of the team. Hulyer actually tried to sign Keegan from Southampton but I believe that he had already agreed to sign for the geordies & wouldn't listen to our offer.

Personally I was always pleased to have got the chance to see Simo play rather than Keegan altho admittedly Keegan would have brought us more attention & sponsorship & possibly more of a work ethic to the team.

March51 it wasn't just the Simo signing that pushed us towards bankruptancy. Don't forget we signed Carl Harris from Leeds, Terry Bullivant from Villa & was it Phil Walker from Leicester (sure he had moved from smallwall at that point?) & I'm sure only a down payment was made & we simply defaulted on the instalments because Hulyer had no money & yes our future lay upon the shipload of rubber & the African Prince ........who had no money either from memory.

Bad days yes Gibbons but now just another part of the rich tapestry of life supporting Charlton.......come on what other clubs future has hung on tracing a boatload of rubber. You've got to laugh .......or is it just me ?

  • Heard he was looking at teaming up with Risdale to form a company that specialises in saving clubs on the brink of liquidation, rape them of all their assets and walk away leaving the fans to try to rebuild from scratch.
  • Sorry, I should have said 'helped' drive us..........It was indeed a privilege to see Simmo in the red and white.

Sorry March didn't mean to sound pedantic, just that there were a lot of reasons why we found ourselves on the brink
  • It just bring memory back i now thay were bad days but we have à great club and surporters im proud to be a charlton fan i never looked back .If we go up what i think we will it should be dedicated to every CHARLTON fan who has stood by the club in the last 35 years .

  • The main reason why we were in a financial mess in the 80s was around 30-40 years of chronic under-investment in the club and asset stripping by the Gliksten's. Hulyer inherited an accident waiting to happen and made sure that it did.

Bit unfair Tango, he was/is a lifelong fan who had little sense or money when it came to owning a football club. Dark days indeed but rather than walk away he crawled. His business ruined & reputuation in tatters. In hindsite he should never have got involved & he may have ruined the club but intentionally rape them of their assets no.
  •  Didnt he bring a nigerian tribal chief onto the board?
Chief Francis Arthur Nzeribe.  According to Airman's book he was an arms dealer.
  • All the Chief could come up with when we were bankrupt, was to moan that we had 2 telephone lines at the club.

    Really bad times.
  • Blackforestreds well said cliksten killed that club just took every penny out off it .Am i right could be wrong but even the south stand was payed by the surporters .
  • I remember when thay closed the gates off the valley walking though CHARLTON park and the team were training in the park .
  • He was without doubt the worst thing that ever happened to our club. Full of swank, wank, false promises, false companies, hidden debts and trying to spend beyond his own means, the banks means and CAFC means.

I think it was Gliksten who separated the club from the ground, selling the club to Hulyer but retaining the ground, I wonder why he did that...

I think Michael Gliksten's motivation was a bit more complicated than that. If he had wanted simply to develop the land he had his opportunity when Charlton walked out in 1985 and whatever position the council had taken on that it would have been up to a planning inspector to decide. When he was persuaded that Martin Simons et al were not in the business of using The Valley for property development he sold it back to the club for a fair price. He did not want to sell it to Sunley's for reasons that should be obvious.

As for Mark Hulyer, he didn't have the money to buy the land and agreed a rent that he couldn't meet.

  • think you might find he is 56 today not 66.

    Got expelled from my school.
  • From what I understand, during the Michael Glickstein years was frustrating because we was producing players and selling them but not having the money to invest in the squad. Billy Bonds should of been a legend for us and not West Ham as an example.

As for Mark Hulyer, he sounds like Peter Ridsdale. Spent money we did not have, I would imagine watching Alan Simonson in a Charlton shirt was brilliant but if we signed Messi or Ronaldo today I would be worried more than excited.

I don't think that anybody gave it a thought in those days. As others have mentioned the Gliksteins by & large failed to invest & the monies that we were receiving for the likes of Marvin Hinton, Mike Bailey, Billy Bonds, Lenny Glover, Alan Campbell & on & on, simply paid the bills & kept the club running. I think that everyone was delighted to see the back of the Gliksteins (although later Michael became an easy scapegoat for fryer & his sunley mob) & to have a young & supposedly rich Charlton fan come in & sign some well know quality players (lol or so we thought !) & then sign a european footballer of the year from Barcelona was just incredible. Most of us were probably star struck as well as being bloody naive.
