25th May 1987 Leeds 1 Charlton 0 Play Off Final Second Leg

edited May 2015 in General Charlton
Leeds 1 Charlton 0 (31395) Elland Road Monday 7.30pm

A Brendan Ormsby goal after 52 minutes meant the game was level after 2 legs, and a replay at St Andrews on the Friday to decide who would be playing first division football in 3 months time.

Was anyone brave enough to make the trip to West Yorkshire 28 years ago today?

  • Went to the home game but couldn't afford the away game. Went to St Andrews for the replay. Not many Charlton went to Elland Road that night.
  • Shamefully didn't go to Elland Road can't remember why , no one to go with , bottled it like a minge, showed my true Charlton colours by not going away , any old excuse but got to St Andrews
Poor numbers for massive games for our clubs , selhurst park blah blah blah

Leeds support pre sky and euro 96 when footy became trendy was and still is massive
One day we'll have that raw passion in more than 300 of us , one day .......
  • I was there, went up on the coach on my own as none of my mates could make it.
  • Yep - went with a couple of friends up and back in the same day.

The atmosphere actually wasn't as electric as the St Andrews game. And like the St Andrews game we were by far the better team throughout the game, but just couldn't score. Mervyn Day made at least three excellent saves and was by far the busier keeper.

Leeds were really physical throughout the game and if the referee had balls would have sent off a couple of their players - especially Aizlewood who, if I remember, was booked early, but somehow managed to stay on the pitch.

Bearing in mind we had the likes of Miller, Shirtliff and Peake on the pitch - none of whom were shrinking violets - we were kicked all over the park. I think at one stage Robert Lee got knocked out.

Like St Andrews, it was a nightmare getting out of the ground post match, with the whippet worriers calling out anyone who looked 'southern' - indeed they even had a go at some London Leeds fans heading back for their coach.

About 30,000 Leeds fans and 300 of us.
  • I'd say there was about 600 of us there. In that last move of the game, you can see us crammed into a pen along the side. When they scored, the place went beserk but the lads (helped massively by the experienced Crooks and Miller) saw the game out brilliantly. That was a season that felt like it was never going to end!
  • Yes, I was there. Travelled up by coach from Eltham if I remember correctly. The atmosphere in the ground was extremely intimidating but I never once thought we were actually going to concede a 2nd goal. Got back home about 3 in the morning after a very long Bank Holiday Monday.
  • I went
We were getting coined about 45 mins before KO.

Like Addickted said it was a dirty game. We were no shrinking violets but they were a Billy Bremner team alright.

  • I was there. Very intimidating and hostile inside and outside the ground. it might just be me, but I actually miss those type of atmospheres.
  • I was there. Poisonous atmosphere. I was in the seats, and the vitriol coming our way was horrendous. I remember sitting on the coach afterwards hoping nothing came through the window, and being given a massive police escort away from the ground.

  • I was there. Great electric atmosphere. Can't remember how many were there.
  • An extremely loud and hostile atmosphere and I do remember coins being chucked at us in the seats. Bremner's team and its supporters almost mirrored each other but this Charlton side had a lot of steel and experience and weren't about to be bullied. Got a bus back to the train station afterwards without any problems, although I suspect it may have been different if we'd got a result. As the superior team, we should have put them to bed at Elland Road.

I went to all three play off games including this one. Went up in a car driven by Kev H who after having to sneak to the car then decided to hit the car in front. That made life interesting surrounded by hundreds of Leeds supporters.

And oohaah the seasons over this match was nearly thirty years ago. How about just giving it a rest for a couple of months.

Yes, went to all three games against Leeds. As we drove away from Elland Road, groups of blokes on the pavements stared at us menacingly - they had clocked our London number-plate and a brick through the windscreen seemed imminent. So we got out of town pretty damn quick - didn't stop until a pub in Morley, where we just about made last orders. Happy days.
  • Yep I was there. Stuck in some god forsaken corner of Elland Road I seem to recall. Don't remember much about the game though. For some reason I always get it confused with the league game two seasons earlier. Probably because we lost that 0-1 too. (Some player called Peter Lorimer scored - I think he was 39 at the time!)
  • Two of us went on the coach. Both 14. Didn't think it was as lively inside the ground as St Andrews but was shitting bangers on the walk back to the coach. Funnily enough of all the play-off games that year, the closest I came to getting a slap was at Ipswich. Some mad old duffer took a swing at me with his walking stick on the walk back to my mates dads car!
  • Think we got a sneak preview of what was to come when we went under a motorway bridge and some nutcase was hanging off aiming kicks at the coach....

It was brewing up a storm before the game, but we did a pretty good containment job on them and it kinda turned attritional, with neither side exerting too much sustained pressure, which kept the crowd relatively quiet, compared with the pre-match tempest.

During the second half a copper was nattering to us, he said he wanted Charlton to win as "We get enough trouble playing Grimsby and Shrewsbury, what's it going to be like against Man Utd?" I mentioned that the natives seemed a tad hostile, he assured me that it was the 3000 outside without tickets that were the problem. Gulp....

  • Yes got my badge of honour and went to all three games v Leeds.

I had actually got married on 2 May (missing the 1-0 home defeat to Luton) and thought I was never going to see the month out. Fortunately when my jelly like legs took me to the bogs at half time, I saw that the old bill had moved our coaches inside the ground. What a relief. Even Mark Pitts (RIP) and Kevin Hopkins seemed relieved:)

As Addickted and Big William said we were much the better side in all three games. I miss those atmospheres and they were real "I was there" moments in my Charlton supporting lifetime.
  • I was there with, I think, my three brothers and sister. The most intimidating atmosphere I can ever recall. I remember that they pelted us with coins and the home end did their own version of the Mexican wave, where they all sat down on the terrace and then stand one by one, fanning out from the bottom corner of the terrace.

    I was there .

We hired a transit van and despite not wearing colours we got bricked on the outskirts of the city . We parked in the disused Greyhound stadium which used be around the corner from Elland Road and stayed quiet whilst we went to the ground . Inside it was only equalled by the battle of Stamford Bridge a year later in terms of intimidation . I reckon we had about 500 there .

After the game we drove to Wakefield where we celebrated. It seems strange to say that after a 1-0 defeat but it felt like a victory to us . I wasn't impressed by Leeds and felt we were a class above them on the pitch . Somehow we had survived and we drank in a local pub until 2am because it was Bank Holiday Monday and they had an extension.

On our bus we all originally were going to work the next day . By the time we reached London about 7am we either threw sickies or took leave.

  • I was there too, and the home game, but couldn't go to St Andrews. The thing I remember most is the sharpened 2 pence pieces that came flying our way. Can't remember much about the game at all!
  • I was there, remember all the coins coming our way, but don't remember any trouble getting in or out. It was a lot worst getting home on the M1 from St. Andrews with London Leeds dropping beer bottles out of cars windows.

The service stations were fun too ;)

Mate for a Monday night we took approx 600 and had also played on the Saturday at the hole selhurst. We then headed up to St Andrews on the Friday night and took a decent following.
The 3 games left a lot of us broke but was well worth it! Happy days and 30 years ago oh dear!
  • Certainly a "lively" night, the maniac hanging on to the emergency exit of the bus whilst yelling about his dislike for people from London was a bit of an experience, especially when he fell off, got back up and chased the bus down the road. That night made St Andrews look like a friendly!
  • Interesting posts on ere seems weird how today me and my mates can go to Leeds singing and hollering etc, how it's changed.

Unfortunately at places like Leeds you're still in with a chance of coming unstuck.
