Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that the club is set to appoint Dane Murphy as Chief Executive Officer.
Murphy will arrive with a proven track record of success, having played a key role in guiding Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League, and previously overseeing Barnsley’s highest league finish in more than two decades.
The appointment is subject to the completion of the EFL Owners and Directors’ Test and the appropriate documentation.
Charlton Chairman Gavin Carter said: “Dane is an ambitious, dynamic, and forward-thinking leader with experience at the top level of the game. He understands what it takes to create a high-performance culture and deliver results. His work at Nottingham Forest and Barnsley demonstrated a clear ability to elevate clubs and drive them forward.
“We’re continuing to build a strong and united leadership team to match our ambitions for Charlton. With promotion to the Championship, Nathan Jones committing to a long-term future, and now Dane joining the club, we’re laying the foundations to take Charlton to the next level.”

Murphy oversaw a significant recruitment drive, with 22 new signings in the 2022 summer transfer window costing around £150 million, aimed at strengthening the squad for the Premier League. While not all signings succeeded, his strategic vision helped lay the foundation for the club’s competitiveness. He also emphasised fiscal sustainability, leveraging the club’s academy and global profile to attract talent
22 players signed in one window? Blimey. Strap in everyone!

"Not giving him a proper contract was the most short sighted thing the clubs ever done".

"Ah well, it was quite nice being well run for a year or so."
So fingers crossed!
Murphy has overseen a similar transformation at Forest, helping the side secure promotion to the Premier League last season."
He sounds quite decent. Not sure i can handle all these sensible appointments we seem to be making.
Very sorry to hear this. It's hard to doubt that DM was the catalyst for the transformation of the club's fortunes. For that he deserves an honoured place in the club's history and, as far as the fans are concerned, he will always have it. I really hope that parting has been respectful and, as far as possible, amicable.
Whether it will make all that much difference now is debatable. It was already clear, with Charnley and Giraldi coming in, that the whole management structure had changed in ways that made DM more marginal. I've no idea whether that's ultimately good or bad, but it's the way it's been for a while, so his departure is unlikely to be any great shock to the system.
Anyhow, bon voyage Dane -- you'll always be remembered with affection by most Forest fans.

He took over as CEO at Barnsley in July 2019 after they were promoted to the Championship. They just escaped relegation in the first season and finished 5th the following season before we hired him that summer. Last season, the first without him, they finished bottom., while we got promoted via the playoffs.
Whether Barnsley's relegation was related to his move to us or not I can't be sure, but I suspect it was.
I want to like you Dane, help us out!
Compare it to the amateurish or outright criminal bungling of previous regimes and you have to be at least a little bit excited, even if we still have a very long way to go yet.

Arnhem football club Vitesse has a team of five new owners—two Americans, two Germans, and one Italian.
Dane Murphy, Flint Reilly (from the US), Timo Raasch, Leon Müller (from Germany), and Italian Bryan Mornaghi have jointly bought the club’s €17 million debt from its biggest creditor Coley Parry.
Parry stepped into keep the club afloat after Vitesse was put up for sale by its Russian owner, Valery Oyf, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Attempts to sell the club since then have failed.
The new owners have opted to stay out of the limelight for the time being, and why they decided to take over the club remains unclear.
Murphy has a long history in professional football, having played for VfL Osnabrück and New York Cosmos and been a director at English clubs Barnsley and Nottingham Forest.
“The shareholders are young, ambitious, realistic, and determined to do what is best for Vitesse,” the club said in a statement. “That will take time. Vitesse deserves to become a self-reliant club that focuses on the continual development of its youth, players, and organisation rather than short-term success.”
