+++ Harry Clarke Signs on Loan from Ipswich Town +++
Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the loan signing of Harry Clarke from fellow Sky Bet Championship outfit Ipswich Town.
The 24-year-old defender, who starred in the Tractor Boys’ back-to-back promotions to the Premier League, joins for the remainder of the season to become the Addicks’ first signing of the January transfer window.
The club’s Managing Director James Rodwell commented: “Strengthening our defence is a key priority this window, so we’re delighted to sign Harry. He’s an excellent defender with strong Championship experience and the versatility to play across the backline. He’ll be a valuable addition to the squad, and I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt.”
Manager Nathan Jones added: “We’re delighted to bring a player of Harry’s calibre to the football club. He’s an athletic, versatile defender with good experience for his age, and he’s already had real success at this level having starred in Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League.”
Asked about his switch to SE7, Clarke said: "The main thing for me was the manager. I spoke to him and I got that feeling of being really wanted at a place straight away. Not many teams have come to Portman Road this season and won convincingly which Charlton did, so they're the appealing factors."
The Ipswich-born defender began his career with his hometown club before joining Arsenal in 2015.
After signing a professional contract with the Gunners in 2018, he gained senior experience during a series of loan spells at Oldham Athletic, Ross County, Hibernian and Stoke City.
Following an impressive start to the 2022/23 campaign with the Potters, Clarke rejoined Ipswich for an undisclosed fee and immediately played a valuable role in the Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.
The 24-year-old featured 39 times during the following campaign as Kieran McKenna’s men secured back-to-back promotions.
After earning seven top-flight appearances for Town, Clarke joined promotion-chasing Sheffield United on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.

Welcome Harry.4

Welcome. He’s a very good player at this level.9

Well, we certainly need cover for Burke, who is made of rice paper. So can't complain at all. Best of luck Harry0

Welcome Harry ! Can you start on Saturday?1

Pleased with that. Much needed. Let’s hope he hits the ground running1

Good signing if fit2

Cover for Ramsay/Burke, could function as a replacement for Bree, with experience at this level and a point to prove to his original club.
Good example of how to do business in January.9 -

Probably hit the ground, twist his knee and be out for the rest of the season knowing our luck.Brownie12 said:Pleased with that. Much needed. Let’s hope he hits the ground running17 -
Seems quite a Jones type of player in terms of style and attitude, covers positions that need covering, we should be able to sort a permanent move if successful but only a loan if not.
Hopefully he can hit the ground running.2 -
Bald head, goatee and tattoos, looks the part.2

Left or right footed?0

Welcome Harry, a winner against your former loan club this weekend would be a great start!0

Right.0

Right footed. Would expect him to play most of his football RCB or RWB but has also played left back on occasion when needed.1

Is he there to cover ring wing back or RCB?0

Strong single tattoo sleeve, sharp haircut and radiant smile suggesting oral health is a key priority for Harry.
Holds that pen well suggesting good transferable coordination.
I like what I see so far.39 -

Welcome,
Reddit reviews from Ipswich fans have him down as a passionate, blood and thunder type, decent going forward, but carries an injury risk and can switch off/ get caught out of position
No doubt that he's a solid championship backup/ squad option though.2 -
Harry Clarke...bored of him already, who's next...😉7

Reddit Ipswich saying he's probably best for RCB.3 -
Probably both? I could see us doing Clarke RCB and Ramsay RWB but also Ramsay RCB and Clarke RWB depending on what Jones sees. He could also fill a hole at LCB in certain set ups.Valley11 said:Is he there to cover ring wing back or RCB?Also depends on Bree’s status although it feels like he might be on his way back to Saints.2 -
A right sided defender was mentioned over the last couple of weeks on Cawley’s podcast and with the injury record this season of Ramsay and especially Burke, a player was certainly required there.
Not played this season which is a negative but there lies the gamble when bringing in loans during a January transfer window like we did 12 months ago with Tom McIntyre5 -
he'll do for me0

Glad we're moving on from ex-Luton players to ex-Stoke players.
Good age, in a position/s we need, experienced at this level, relatively low cost (% of wages and perhaps a loan fee) with potential to sign on perm in summer.
Welcome and good luck, Henry.6 -
It seems like his pedigree is not in doubt but how many games has he played this season & is he fit to play 90 mins on Saturday if called upon?3
