Surprised to learn he's 25, thought he was much younger than that. He was supposed to be freakishly gifted at youth level and had quite the reputation, thought he'd have really pushed on by now.
I think he needs games. His shot stopping is very good. His decision making and command of his area is what has tended to let him down on occasions. Being a bit calmer and picking his moments when to come charging out would make a big difference to his game, but some players need to make those mistakes to learn the lessons from them. It's probably one of the reasons keepers tend to come good later than outfield players. If you're sat on the bench too much then you don' t get the opportunities to learn in a match setting where it really counts. That's not to say he hasn't had opportunities, and you also have to do enough with those opportunities to justify being given a run of games, but he's been in and out of the team for a lot of his time when involved with the first team and probably been a bit harshly judged at times. His confidence looked shot at the end of last season (he wasn't the only one) and I think that affected some of his performances too.

Being in and out of the side due to form/injury has probably not helped him there. Any extended run has come in teams that were by and large pretty poor or at the very least in bad form generally.
He does have the hope that cliché/tradition has it that keepers often "peak" later than outfield players so 25 is still pretty young by that metric.
We've not replaced Amos and Dillon properly since they left. Since then, all our keepers have been more like good backup keepers, rather than clear first choices.

Biggest negative for me about Ash is he is not vocal and comes across as too nice. You need your keeper to have be abit of an oddball, most of yhem are or atleast be able to communicate. His kicking is pretty meh, one on one, his fantastic. Don't be surprised to see him at Crawley if we get another keeper in, Rob Elliot rates him as one of the best young keepers his ever worked with.
I don't think he is somehow, and the powers that be seem to agree with me
i don’t think the “powers that be” have any idea what a good player looks like - based on the recruitment this season and letting the 2 best players leave !
Think Mannion being injured is one of the reasons ,though I not solely blame maynard-brewer, to our dip in form. Him being charlton youth should cloud our judgement. I still prefer Mannion.

The loss of Jones is far more important than the loss of Mannion though.

The fact the defensive line (that provided the run of clean sheets) is gone is the important loss.
If you are saying Jones with Maynard-Brewer can provide the same quality as Jones with Mannion then I concede the pont.
We conceded another corner yesterday and, while talking it over with someone I know, he (Maynard-Brewer) should of been better on their second.
Other teams know that against him just put high balls into his area he flaps and panics ! A decent shot stopper but shouldn’t be anywhere near our team
AMB has maybe benefitted from Jones' return and an easier run of fixtures, but he's also made a few big saves in that run. I always felt he'd settle down a bit when his confidence came back, and I still maintain that some of those rash decisions he made last season were partly down to him trying to take responsibility for covering for the shonky defence in front of him. I've always felt some of the criticism he gets, while not completely unfounded, is too strong and I'm pleased to see he's looking better with a more reliable defence ahead of him.
He and Mannion have slightly different strengths and weaknesses but, overall, I would say there's not a huge amount to choose between them. Having a settled back line, especially goalkeeper and central defenders is so important. Time to pick one of them and stick with them for a good run of games, unless they really gives a strong reason to be dropped. Personally, I still slightly prefer AMB. I always like goalies to be shot stoppers first and foremost and I think AMB is stronger in that department. You can coach better command of an area and communication with the defence, it's hard to teach pure reflexes.
Both AMB and Mannion have been goodish, neither have let us down when they've played, neither have been so outstanding that they've won us loads of points single handed.
The defence in front of them, and the midfield shield are more important factors in our clean sheets than either keeper
I think we can and probably should be looking for a keeper better than either AMB or Mannion realistically and that might well end up something done in January if the right deal can be done.
Apart from a terrible error against Crawley he has been fine. All keepers can make errors, even the best ones. I think he deserves his place and hope he improves further which I think is more than possible.
Our team is set up to defend in numbers, which has made the keepers’ lives easier . AMB, much like Andy Petterson, is unlikely to improve too much on crosses and therefore is unlikely to be a long term number one . Glad he’s doing ok though .

Goalkeepers benefitting from having a strong defensive shape in front of them.

Get rid, sick of watching his incompetent displays.
