  • Something I struggle with is why don't we offer players like TC long-term deals when they're clearly showing enough potential to be worth the investment?

It's almost inevitable he's going to get to the last 6 months of his contract before we offer him something else.
Except before this year he didn’t show potential.  Last year he was awful.  Would pull out of tackles, not track back and was wildly erratic in his crosses.  It wasn’t until this year that he started showing some progress.  I would assume a contract extension is being discussed.
  • He literally signed a 2 year deal with club option year on top of that (so we have him until at least 2027 if we want) six months ago.

This wouldn’t surprise me. He looks much more threatening this season and as I said on the Chuks thread he’s unlucky not to have any assists to his name

Interesting. The potential is definitely there, but without a consistent end product yet I can’t see anyone paying the type of fee that would be worth accepting.

With effectively another 2 years on his contract we should reject offers to let him continue to develop, he’ll be worth a lot more if he’s comfortably getting into double figures for goals and assists.

  • He is looking so dangerous as a ball carrier the last few weeks playing in that inside left channel.

He's adding to his game as well. Defenders are being dragged out of position to pressure him and not let him turn. He's learning that he has to keep them guessing - one time he might lay it off to Edwards or Coventry, another he'll use muscle and his low centre of gravity to swivel and leave the defender trailing or win us a pressure relieving free kick.

If he adds any kind of goal output to his game (and I think it's going to come) there's no way he's in League One for much longer.
Agree he's looked fantastic recently, whereas at the start of the season he seemed very out of place.

I do think there is a slight problem though as in our formation it's leaving the central striker a bit isolated at times while TC is coming over to the left when a support striker will usually help out in the middle more.

Everything comes down to getting a better player in the berry position really, that can create when on the ball and get forward to support Leaburn/Chuks quicker also.
We need someone a lot better than Berry breaking from midfield to support the attack.  With Coventry and Docherty sitting , I’m convinced you could play an extra attacking player in this system - add the energy of Kanu, for example as someone that could run in behind Leaburn.

    AMB

    Mitchell, Jones, Ramsay

    Small, Docherty, Coventry, Edwards

    Kanu, Campbell

    Leaburn.

  • He’s been brilliant but I thought he was a bit tired yesterday and of course he’s getting closer attention from the opposition now but he didn’t seem to have as many attacking threats yesterday as he has in recent times .
The strength him and Small show prove that the gym works for these fine specimens.

    Ruben Amorim is that you?
  • I thought yesterday he had one of his best games for Charlton. Was regularly making great runs at and past Shrewsbury defenders. Dragging them out of position and turning them.
It's shame we aren't trying Kanu as his replacement as he has only slightly less speed (more stamina) but he plays a different way, more running in behind the defence. TC has struggled to make an impact playing like that for a lot of his season.  I hope DK can work on adding an alternative style to his play and become a good straight swap alternative to TC.

Going against the grain here clearly but I don't rate him. No pace, no skill and very weak in a challenge. The only winger I've seem that seems to actively dislike being 1v1 against a defender.

Can put his recent poor performances down to confidence, but he's struggled to even control a ball multiple times in the same match.

He needs loan to LG 2 to prove he's got what it takes imo.
A comment from one year ago.
It might serve as advice about rushing to judgement of our own young players coming through.
See also Karoy Anderson and others.

  • I just hope Dixon is watching him closely as he appears to have more of a finishers touch (in youth games admittedly). If TC can start getting goals and assists he either helps fire us up the leagues or we get a decent chunk of money for him.

I just don’t see why would need so many defensive minded players.

Dixon should be introduced initially near the end of games we’re winning pretty comfortably (if that ever happens). Dixon will make basic errors and frustrate, but his attributes might well eventually compensate for mistakes, a bit like what is happening nowadays with Small.

On a side note, I noticed Shrewsbury would leave one or two up when defending corners, something we never do, if Dixon plays for us he would be the perfect player to leave upfield in those circumstances, he is as fast and eager at the end of games as he is at the beginning, and by fast, I mean fast.
Is Dixon ready for first team football? From the little I’ve seen so far I’m not sure I’d risk it (throwing youngsters in when they aren’t ready is a bad move, even if we’re winning the particular match comfortably). Not sure if any of those who have seen him more regularly think he’s ready for first team action.

In fairness to Jones, he has really developed TC. When he started playing him through the middle as a starting striker I thought it was ridiculous but he’s starting to click there.
Agreed, the improvement in TC is possibly Nathan Jones' best achievement with a individual player.
  • Amazing transformation from a player that looked completely out of any kind of confidence under Appleton and if NJ hadn't come in might have even been released. Didn't think the striker move was going to work and it was a bit square pegs in round holes but it's worked a treat.
  • He literally signed a 2 year deal with club option year on top of that (so we have him until at least 2027 if we want) six months ago.
Yeah but Harland signed for nine years.  Our board are so short sighted   :D

  • The thing is, we say he has no end product but plenty of times he's got to the byline and put in a decent cross only for our centre forward and midfielders to not be up with play.
  • Credit where it's due to NJ: he gave him zero minutes last season because he didn't have a role for him, but now he's found one—and it's a big one.

He's been the player most responsible for this uptick in form.

When he's not out there, the whole system becomes a lot less effective.
