Tyreece has to be the most transformed of all players. His added muscle, strength determination has made him such a certain pick. Nathan Jones must take the credit in steering Tyreece to this point. Previous criticisms of him last season being bullied off the ball no longer apply; he being a major reason the team is doing well.
A lot of credit to Tyreece himself as well, it's incredible the amount of muscle he's put on over the summer and I can only imagine how difficult that was for someone with a naturally skinny frame. Every week I'm seeing him pin 6ft+ defenders and doing what he wants with the ball - night and day from previous years.

And hes done so without losing any noticeable amount of pace or agility, which is always a risk if you focus too much on bulking up and pure strength.

I'd actually say he looks a far bit quicker and more explosive this season.
Yeah he's so important to us now and once he improves his finishing in general he will be some player. Must admit I didn't think he would improve as much as he has. One of those players you always feel will do something special
It's part physical conditioning, and part rebuilding his confidence. He was hiding a bit last season, at times, but that was not something he did when he first came into the team so it was clear something was not right with him. I don't know if it was Appleton at fault or if it just coincided with Appleton being here but NJ and/or his coaching team appears to have done a good job in helping TC re-find his mojo. On top of that everyone involved has done a great job on building his physical strength, and of course he also turned 21 and is likely just maturing into his full adult physique a bit as well.
Feels like a while since we've been able to watch a young player really develop and improve in our first team. In recent years they've either been sold at he first sign of interest (Gomes, Pope, Lookman etc. etc.) or have stagnated or gone backwards (e.g. Albie Morgan). It used to be something we saw frequently, eve knowing they would be sold eventually, and was one of the more enjoyable aspects of following our club. Hopefully it's something that might be coming back a bit.
His progress this under Jones has been brilliant to see and his workmate is fantastic. 1 minor grumble with TC (and it's a good job Lee Bowyer isn't our manager) is he does pull his foot out of a 50/50 a bit. Seen this a few times this season.
With the improvement of him and the ascendancy of Small and Ramsey as examples it must make us an interesting option for good kids looking to play football and leave the comfort zone of a PL academy either permanently or on loan in the summer you would think. Great examples to show how we have nurtured them and bought them on and now, with the back staff are really looking after our players welfare and careers.

He does it quite a lot to be fair and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets injured from it one day, pulling out is worse than staying in.
In fairness to Jones, he has really developed TC. When he started playing him through the middle as a starting striker I thought it was ridiculous but he’s starting to click there.
I'd love to agree, but he's definitely playing out wide still. Not really ever central.

He does play out wide when we’re attacking, but when defending he can use his pace and energy to press as one of two strikers, or save it for when he gets the ball, rather than having to track back.
Keeping concentration, being strong in a tackle and getting in a good defensive position aren’t required in the same way they would be if he was playing as a winger. Those are weaknesses in his game that he no longer has to work on to the extent he would if we needed him to defend as a wide player.
He plays wide but much more centrally than a standard winger, particularly nearer the halfway line in build up. Obviously this is tainted by the first few months of the season
Watching TC come through the ranks he was a devastating player largely against his peers from other clubs. Sooner or later those peers from other clubs will be the opponents he faces as a grown man, and if he devastated them in the past, he can devastate now. TC is a salutary lesson for those who rush to judgement. The journey from an academy player to the first team is a complex and tricky quest. By contrast Tolu Lapado looked great at youth level for us, but is now a free agent.
Pat on the back for NJ, before he came TC was going nowhere except out of the door, maybe on loan, then NJ decided to play him as a striker, which most on here did not agree with. It took a few games and others to work with him but now we know what NJ saw and we did not.

He must have done a lot of strengthening work in the summer. Last season he was like a boy playing in men's football, with the odd flash of brilliance. This season he can hold his own against most defenders and regularly demonstrates his upper body strength. He is now a real threat , going inside or out and his crossing has also improved.

Almost as if teenagers can grow and develop, who knew

It's not just that teenagers can grow and develop, the difference is massive, mentally as well as physically. By the end of last season he had over 50 appearances, ample time to have improved. Whatever he did over the summer has changed him.
It's been obvious from the moment he broke through that he has a class and skill about him. Such a quiet chap too. Appleton really destroyed him last season but he has come back so well. I hope he pushes on, add more goals and assists and he is a serious £ asset.

The environment is also a huge factor, game time alone isn’t enough. You’re right he had made over 50 appearances, but many were off the bench, and in his two full seasons he played under four managers in Garner, Holden, Appleton (who destroyed his confidence) and Jones, plus caretakers. All used different formations and playing styles which doesn’t help senior players, never mind academy players coming through.
TC has got fitter and stronger - no doubt helped by the better medical/sports science etc setup we now have as well as Jones.
In Jones we have a better manager who has helped him get his confidence back, and he’s in a settled team that are winning games. Tactics have helped too. When we defend he stays high up the pitch as one of two strikers so his defensive weaknesses aren’t exposed, while he still gets the freedom to drift out wide on the left and play his natural game.
If we were still sacking managers, going through takeovers and trying to scrape together points to stay in L1 I doubt TC would have made the same progress.
All these improvements should help others break through and develop more/faster. The u21s even play 3-5-2 just like the first team, which can only make the step up easier. Players like Gomez, Shelvey and Lookman were so good they stood out regardless. Most aren’t at that level, but if we get the environment in a good place players like TC have plenty to offer.

Must be a right pain in the backside for oppo defenders.

If he carries on playing like this there will be a lot of interest in him in the summer.
I’ve been thinking why he doesn’t do it more often - I think one aspect is he could do with being more selfish at times and taking a few more shots.
He played well and another day he could have had an assist to go with his goal.
He’s a great example of why we need to be patient with young players and have faith in how and when Jones uses them.
