RIP Richard Redden

  • I was given a copy of the cartoon book when it first came out. An amazing piece of research at a time before the internet made searching old newspapers a lot easier than it once was. RIP to a club legend.
The club shop held a stock of those that didn't seem to shift for years and I personally baulked at it for quite a while. I don't think the cover gave it justice. It was is an amazing book though. If anyone hasn't read it yet, it's well worth seeking it out.
  • How do you replace someone like Richard. His books are must have for Charlton fans. RIP
  • First met Richard years' ago when he started the Bromley Addicks and enjoyed some great away days. We used to hold meetings with players in his front room! By the way yes, it's a great book.
  • Sorry to hear this. He deserves a lot of credit for taking the initiative with his original book, which nobody else had done. It was the first book about Charlton for at least 30 years and easily the most ambitious, even though he fell out with publisher Breedon Books.
Just for the record. Breedon Books did a further print run of the first book without agreement and allegedly tried to shaft him out of his royalties. Richard had every reason to fall out with them. He updated the book with a fresh chapter and re-launched it himself. I remember helping him unload a couple of thousand books from the delivery lorry and stacking them up in his house. It took a while but he sold the lot.

Yes, I wasn’t implying it was his fault.
