Charlton caller on Radio 5

Sounded like Danny Dyer's dad............thought he was going to call Sheffield Utd fans 'mugs' and talk about 'our manor'. He will get a part in 'Football Factory 6' and 'Green Street 12' no doubt. The sad thing about that call, is that he was being serious about his surprise about our fans drinking and singing in Sheffield pubs unchallenged................. actually, isn't that a good thing? If it was a deliberate ironic comedy sketch it was mildy amusing, if he was serious then it is a worry. His comments about the crowd yesterday were embarrassing - he tried to give the impression that 22,000 is the normal crowd at The Valley, which we all know is not true. A mate in the pub said 'No wonder everyone thinks that Charlton fans are f..ing idiots'........ and he was a Charlton fan!

God forbid some of our  supporters  don't fit into the pc, happy clappy, lets all shake hands and pat the back of "our opponents at the footie" and swap  foam hands and jester hats image of football supporters that all of us are expected to be now.  He didnt talk about his "manor" or call anyone "mugs" was just a humourous call that buck the trend of the normal turgid dross of football phone ins.

We are so quick to criticise are our own fans at every opportunity and as for your mate in the pub who cares what everyone thinks about our fanbase based on a light hearted phone call.

He phoned in after a few lemonades and had a laugh....he wasnt terrorising women and kids looking to "av it with Sheffields top boys" (apologies if you were actually able to gauge thathe was  from a 30 second phone call)

I didn't even get a pie... how bad is that!

No more than I expected from a talk radio station. They all tend to do this; state the obvious, complain about a ref,  imply Newcastle/Spurs are real top 4 material and then round it off with a village idiot. Yesterday it was our turn for the mildly amusing fan on the show.
Although he did come across a sounding little like an extra from a Brit gangster film he did have a point about the pies, there should have been more of them. The United chairman did say the were caught out with number of fans that turned up who paid on the gate.


He did make me laugh though, most of us ( really speaking for myself
here) would sound a little out of our depth when asked to speak on a
national radio/tv station. I once declined a chance to speak on QVC.

Shame 5 live like to concentrate on this type of story when they drop down the leagues when they have a perfectly good chance to talk about a team 5 points clear, undefeated in the 3rd month of the season and just beat a promotion rival away from home.

When we play United down here we should give them pies and poured beer left over from
our previous home game. That should give them a weekend remember and
something to phone radio stations.

When you have crowds in their thousands, it will refelct the whole of society. Unfortuantely, a small handful in society are below monkeys in terms of intellect and we are going to have one or two of those -it is the law of averages. They are a very small minority and most are harmless though and as a whole our fans are special.

BTW, many congratulations to Sheffield that our fans were well respected by the sound of it on Saturday. A huge positive for their club and city.

And their lot wern't that friendly after then again neither were ours on the way back.

Just listened to him. He was funny, going on about there being no pies.He sounded like a Millwall fan though, moaning that there was no trouble after the match. Overall he added some colour to the show and wasn't really an embarrassment.

Well I'd buy him a pie if I met him. Call of the show if you ask me.

On Sheff. U: "We've had a loverly day out with the people of Sheffield at lunchtime... marvellous! ... I was expecting hostility..."

On BWP: ".. tasty little touch... took him on, took the mickey... put it in!"

Sounds like a right character, good on him.

one word for that man "character" some classic lines in that interview... i would happily tune into hear what he had to say after charlton games (specially away) who wants to know formations when you can get down to the nitty gritty of no pies at half time and how hostile the town is were visiting!
