Back to the programmes and the two oldest programmes we have on sale as part of CL/Bromley Addicks auction to raise money for the CAFC Academy.

Item A:  A Charlton v  Arsenal first division programme from 10 March 1956.  We won 2 - 0 with both goals from the infamous Jimmy Gauld but this match's significance is that is was the last game the great Sam Bartram ever played for the Club.  Two days later he was manager of York City.

The programme is, frankly, in very poor condition.  The pages have come lose and it has tea cup stains and pen marks.  If it wasn't so old and from such an important game I doubt I'd even offer it but it is from a time when we were disappointed that we "only" got 40,000 at the gate.  Over 71k had been at the FA Cup game two weeks before

Opening bid £1

Item B  Charlton v Wolves home first division programme 24 march 1956.  Two weeks later and we lose 2 - 0 in front of 27,372

This programme is in better condition but can only really be described as fair/good.  Team changes have been noted in pencil as was common in those days.  For it's age it's not bad considering programmes then were printed on paper similar to a newspaper or comic with no heavy glossy cover.

Opening bid £1

As ever winner will have to pay postage or collect.

Auction ends Thursday 6th at 5.00pm

Happy bidding

Out of interest was Hewie playing for South Africa or a Springbok 11 or Scotland in the fixture mentioned in the programme above?
Any guesses as to why the fixture was played at Ibrox?.

I think making up "prose" about Bartram's Copper Nob is wholly inappropriate, typical Charlton fans ;-)

Not sure about the South Africa game.  Will have to check when I have time.

Seed managed the team as well.

So no bids then, even at £1?

Thanks,  I really didn't think they would go this high but I think I've been over-cautious (ie wrong) a few times before on prices.

And still two days more bidding.

I have consulted my servants and they tell me "an Ayrton" is rhyming slang for £10.  One is not sure why.  : - )

A tenner for each it is.

I'll bid £12.50 for each one.

I've just been given a Charlton vs Preston 1947 program by a lady at work and now fancy adding to my collection.

Got a lot of 60s and 70s programmes coming up for sale soon (mostly likely as a whole season) so watch this space.
