As a 10 yr old  at the time, I think I remember the Swansea game. We won 6-2 & Flanagan scored 4 . It was one of my first games & the 1st season I went regularly. I think a couple of weeks later we beat Notts C 6-0, which was a better result as Swansea were relegated & County promoted. I didn't go to that game I think as it was an evening one.

In 1976 I think we beat Southampton at The Valley was that game 6-2 ?  Soton team included Ball,Channon,Osgood.

Does anyone else remember these games & please feel free to correct any above mistakes.

It just got me thinking when we nearly scored 6 on Saturday.

I remmeber the swansea game, I am sure they were swansea town at the time, it was an evening game, I think Peter Reeves scored and the referee and a linesman were also called Reeve.  Have been waiting for another six goal haul ever since and thought it was going to happen yesterday

I was "at" the Southampton game, my dad was a builder and was working on the tower block. We watched the game from the building site. It was a Friday night game and I'm sure there was a fireworks display on the south terrace as it was then. The score was 6-2.

I know " Large" was at the Saints game - i missed it as it was an evening agme and I was only 9 years old. I beleive there was a problem with the gates at the Bartram Entrance and there was a bit of a crush...........or has he been telling me porkies all these years ??

It does show that we are not a "big" scoring team - 35 yrs since we have scorted 6 goals & that includes cup game against non-league sides when we were a Prem team.

On the other side of the coin we have let in 6 at home (Leeds) and 7 away (Brighton / Wrexham ?) during that time.

Seen us ship 7 at Luton (around 78 I'd guess) and Brighton (84?), 6 at Wrexham in 1980. 5 too many times to count...

I think there was a mauling of 6 or 7 from Burnley at some stage in the late 70's but I wisely stayed at home for that.

I was at both Luton & Brighton when we shipped 7. We were doing the conga at The Goldstone at HT 5-0 down.

Burnley in about 75 we were 1-4 up with about 15 mins left and either lost 5-4 or drew 4-4.

I had just started at Uni then so missed both. Just looked it up in Colin Cameron's indispensible tome. Swansea was 6-0, Notts County 6-1 with Flash scoring his four in that one. The gates were 4,000 and 6,000 respectively...makes you think, eh?

I was at all the games you mention. The Notts County and Swansea games were, from memory, both Tuesday night matches and that only served to make the next day's time at school all the better!

Southampton was 24/9/76 - 35th anniversary on the day of the Chesterfield game this season.

Swansea 6-0 and Notts County 6-1 were three weeks apart in 1972. Flan's four goals made the Notts game more memorable.

I saw all three, but hadn't put together that all three were evening games.

Before that you have to go back to March 1963, when Plymouth were beaten 6-3 at The Valley on a Saturday (Charlton having lost 6-1 at Home Park earlier in the season). Mind you, in 60/61 Charlton won the same fixture 6-4 at The Valley on Boxing Day and lost 4-6 at Home Park the next day. They also drew 6-6 with Middlesbrough, thrashed Swansea 6-2 and beat Portsmouth 7-4. They won 6-1 at Luton in 61/62.

That's (not) enough sixes - ed.

  • Yup.  Was at all three of those.
  • was at all three games in the 70,s Swansea Peter Reeves 2nd and last goal for Charlton scored from out side the box at the Heights end of the ground.Notts County the only time i have seen a Charlton player hit 4 in a match think he was playing left wing at the time and had only scored once before that night. As for Southampton think it was only a few months before that, they had lifted the fa cup against Man U.
  • Was at the Saints match  Killer..... took us top of the league if memory is correct  (Sat games to come), would have the gate at 15,000 plus
  • So was the Soton game the last time we scored 6 ?

Yes it was, 21/9/76 Flanagan 2,Hales 2, Bowman and Powell got the goals. My first game:)
I thought you'd been going longer to be honest

The crowd was 9,710 - our record going into the game was W2, D2, L2, so I doubt if we went top.

may be worth a separate thread for who has seen all 8 of below ..perhaps such a person doesnt exist
    7-6 v uddersfeeled ...
3 home games v notts co,swansea and soton in 70 s when we got 6
the away games at wrexham, brighton and luton when we let in 7
and the 6-1 defeat to leds in the premiership

if anyone can claim to 6/8 reckon its worth a free duck from the superstore

I'm impressed that you have conveniently ignored the 1-11 defeat at Aston Villa.

I can do the three homes games where we scored six, and the defeat at home to Leeds.  I still feel guilty about lying to my Dad about the Leeds result.  He was dying in hospital and I told him we won 2-0.

over 35 years since we last scored six. Won't get a better chance than on Saturday.
  • Did we not lose 7-1 at burnley in the early 80s as well ? Seem to recall Killer and Aizlewood were sent off
  • I know we're looking for sixes but for most goals in a game what about the 5-5 draw away at Brizzel Rovers.

Of the other games I was at Soton home, Luton, Brighton and Wrexham away and of course the Brizzel game.

    Happy days (I think).

Know what you mean, but we will. Probably this season. Maybe even on Sunday!
