I have my doubts as to how proactive he was in bringing any of them in so I doubt it will work the other way.

Just my theory but I think Powell is in a much stronger position now than ever before since becoming manager and he is calling the shots as to the rest of the backroom team.
  • Agreed, Henry.  Remind you of someone?!!

Powell is the heir and true son of Curbs.

My guess is that someone worked out that all the good new players came from Powell's and Dyer's personal contacts.

Don't know what to make of this to be honest.

Is my memory playing tricks or was Jeff Vetere around when we found the likes of Kish, Jensen, JJ and Bartlett, all of whom helped cement us in the Prem under St Curbs?

I know for a fact that Curbs wanted  Jensen After seeing him For Bolton against us in a cup tie the year we got promoted.Dont think Vetere had much to do with it.

With regard to the current situation: is there any rationale for suggestions that he didn't have anything to do with recent succesful transfers, or is it just based on wind-direction?

I hope it's blowing away from us, because we're all pissing in it.
  • He heard about the pensions so maybe he's left us for a job in the public sector?

Powell said his role was to revamp the scouting network. Mick Collins said similar in this thread.  If we now have a better, bigger, wider scouting set up and JV played a part in that then well done to him.   However the statement on the OS doesn't make any reference to what he may have achieved.  His appointment and now departure both seemed to have happened with a minimum of publicity.

Nearly all the players signed were either playing in this division already (Hamer, Wiggins, Taylor, Hollands, Green etc) or known to Powell and Dyer already (Euell, Kermorgant, Ephraim, Morrison) so it is hard to see, from the outside what influence JV had on those purchases.   He may well have been key in some moves or been a valuable asset in negotiations but none of that has been made clear.  And I repeat, both Powell and Mick Collins have emphasised his role in setting up the scouting networking.

    Let the conspiracy theories begin.

Here's mine.   Came in to set up the scouting network (not pick players for Powell) which has now been done so he's off.

He was at the club around that time, though might have been a few seasons after then.

My guess would be as Henry said that he helped set up the new scouting network. Whatever has happened I'm sure he'd have had some positive impact. He no doubt has a lot of contacts (and can speak several languages). Perhaps some of his contacts are now scouting for the club.

    Remember the rumour about Udinese?

Maybe he found it hard to attract people from Europe to come over and play for a L1 club and quit. Seems like he has alot of contacts in Europe which in all honesty would probably be more suited to the Premier League than where we are right now.

Who knows...maybe at the next meeting with Slater etc we might get an answer.

Notice you didn't mention Alonso there.

Thanks for that at least Jeff.  ;-)

He might have been scouting our out of contract players for other teams.

Would have been easier to spot the ones who aren't out of contract.

I had a chat with him in Millennium Bar actually. Nice bloke. Working for Fulham and was there scouting Poyet (doesn't think he's ready for Premier League yet but will be in a year or two)

Said he thinks Bent has too much money and has lost the hunger
Said Mitroglu at Fulham was nothing to do with him and he has no idea what's wrong with him

Not the first time I've seen the words "Fulham" and "not ready for the premier league" in the same sentence.............
