1991-2 season at home to Grimsby, Anthony Barness scores one of the most bizarre own goals ever. Does anyone remember it?

More to the point, how come it's never been on any gaffes collection that I've seen? (And I've seen quite a few)

I remember Steve Downman scoring an own goal at The Valley in the early 80's from around 35 yards out over the head of Nicky Johns . Spectacular , and I don't expect for on minute it was caught on camera and I'm pretty sure I didn't dream it.

I watched this not long ago, I remember walking into the ground with my dad just as Barness scored that goa to make it 2-0l, I think we were 3-0 down in about 15 mins.

by the way oohaah I was 7 or 8 at the time :) have always remembered that game because of Barness's wonder own goal.

Charlton were really scrappy that night, couldn't string 3 passes together.

I remember anthony barness og that night(i think it was a night game) it was at upton park.I also wondered why it was not shown very often. On the way to the game the coach from bexleyheath stopped to pick up at charlton.we went in the waterman arms for a pint talking about our return to the valley.the guvnor of pub told us that we couldnt afford to finish temporary stand or pay for the seats and he didnt want us back anyway.shit night i think we lost maybe 4- 0 got stuck in blackwall for ages on way home.I was told that Curbs paid for stand/seats out of his own pocket in the end.I vowed never to return to the watermans and was glad to see it go!!!!!although it had been a good pub before we were exiled.

    Lost 3-1, Bert.

Back in the early 70s, the Waterman Arms was the pre-match pub for me and my mates.
    Always packed out.

    The voice of Steve Dixon.
  • Nothing to add, but I do remember it nonetheless. Sat in the west stand at Upton Park. 50p for a cup of bovril.

  • I remember the game, but oddly not the own goal in particular.

Was there in West Stand.  Great goal - not many forwards would have tucked that away!  Also remember in same season going for a p*** just at the end of the half time break (huge queues for bogs in those days).  Players were walking back out and I thought I'd have plenty of time before any real action started.  Still big queue but I thought I'd hang on and wait.  Had to wait a good 5 minutes.  While waiting - heard a bit of cheering going on.  Got back to where my brother was standing and asked what was happening.  He said nothin happening yet.  Never told me that Marco Gabbiadini had just scored a hat trick against us.  Have never been to a pub before a match since!

You were lucky to miss the hat-trick!! I was there.

Although, those goals did secure MG a big money move to Palace, if I'm not mistaken...where he was rubbish. The Lord works in mysterious ways....

I remember that game and the own goal. But in my head it was Jamie Stuart, not Barness. Strange thing the memory.
  • i remember carlo's goal more as we were on a bad run and i had backed 3-0 grimsby @50/1
  • Remember that pretty clearly - think I would have still been a ball boy at the time, probably standing on the chicken run. Miserable night!

Is it because you cant remember when you was 7 or 8 :)

  • I was there behind the goal. Only 3654 there that night. Was probably stood with BDL
  • I can't remember todays game so 7 or 8 probably never happened for me and it probably happened twice for you !
