The Royal Oak
Does anyone from here drink in this public house anymore? For me it was shocking to walk past at 20 to 3 this afternoon, and see just one person outside drinking with no signs of any empty glasses on the pavements. Okay it was only a FA Cup game with Seven thousand there today, but i have seen ten fold the amount of people outside the Oak, before Pre season Freindles, League Cup, Anglo Italian Cup and Paint Pot Cup games, where the attendances have been around the 3 to 5 thousand mark.
Personally the pub has never been the same since Roger and Gwyn Case run it when we returned to the Valley and Ray after that. The Management in there now seem to have to have no idea in my view how to run a pub. I have been told of stories this season, of where it takes you around 15 mins to get served after a game, cause there are only 2 people serving, and once the Management come out to the Bar, they look in shock that there are people in the pub.
Went into Clancy's before the game and The White Swan in the Village after, and had a few steady beers in what i would call Decent pubs. It saddens me to see a pub like the Oak go downhill like this.

The RoD looked pretty empty too at 2.30. Don't think it was just the Oak not doing business today. Also Valley Cafe- me and my mate were the only cutomers at 2.45 and i have never seen it that quiet.

Went into the Antigalligan for the first time today, quite nice in there, seems like the away fans get the best choice of a bad bunch.

Got chatting to one of the committee who was selling raffle tickets. They've got lots of plans to renovate the place which as even he admitted it badly needs.

The Oak is kind of my local, And it's a good little pub...Good Landlady and Barstaff etc but over the years I've only been in there once on a matchday and it took ages to get served.
I like the Cons Club on matchdays although I miss the Horse & Groom.

Se10 what a khazi the H was! Fantastic place to socialise though, I remember a few of us not bothering going to the game (may have been Arsenal one Xmas time) and watching it on the moody sky. There was a roar for a goal at the ground and the delay was literally 15 minute on the TV!0

Used to stop at the Oak for a quick one after several in the Horse and Groom in the 90s on the way to the ground. Was once accused by an 8yr old of not being 'proper Charlton' cos of my Nortern accent outside the Oak. Can't believe I had to get my Charlton tattoo out to justify my presence to a child. Ah, memories.0

Went in there yesterday but only because I wanted to get our tickets before a beer. Got sick of the waiting a couple of years back now.
I use The Swan on a matchday now.

I think you're talking about the wrong pub Crusty.The Royal Oak in question is near The Valley and The British Oak ( near the rear of Blackheath Rugby Club) is in Old Dover Road..........which I assume is the one you're thinking of.

I went in there yesterday had a couple of pints of spitfire, which was not to bad a bit lively. Numbers less than Monday night when it was acrush or the previous saturday home game, but of course if only 7400 turn up then all the local pubs will be quieter than usual for a match day.0

Rose of Denmark is by far the best pub to get served in, no plastic glasses and decent beer. Will never go back to the oak0

Went in before the Huddersfield game, took way too long to get a beer. Yes it was busy but it was a joke.0

I gave up using this pub earlier in the season and swore never to go back!
The landlord has no idea about how to keep his beer, which invariably tastes like vinegar. In addition, you usually have to wait around 15 minutes to get served (as everyone else has mentioned) and, to add insult to injury, have to pay top "West End" prices. In short, when you eventually get served, you pay well over the odds for an inferior product.

A pub wrecked by greedy and clueless landlords. it went downhill after Ray and Penny left. Very sad to see.

I only get to the valley about 4 times a year as live a long way away. We usually park in the Car Park at the park and walk down to the Rose of Denmark. Although no real problems would be nice to try somewhere else. Any suggestions of decent pub in walking distance that ok for children? Have tried pubs in the village but have always been jam packed and unable to move which not great for the kids albeit a nice atmosphere???0

£1 to get in if not a CIU member which you'll make back on a round. Fine for my 13 year old and lots of other kids.

As long as you stay away from the hard lads like WSS, Plaayer, Ketman, Gumbo, AFKA lording it on their own table then you'll be fine : - )
