Elvis for me but agree it comes down to personal preference as both were excellent in their individual genres

I don't know how much Jackson composed, but I think composition is an overrated part of rock/pop music.

WTF, if no one wrote the songs, they wouldn't have anything to sing!! Its the most important part!!

But you don't need to be judged as a performer on what you wrote.

Alec Guinness, Laurance Olivier, John Gielguld etc. I don't think they wrote many of the roles that their acting is judged on.

Similary Brando, De Niro, Paccino etc.

    Elvis

  • Fanny, you really think the nonce will still be remembered when Elvis is forgotten just because your grand kids are only interested in pop? People who REALLY care about music will always recognise what Presley did for music above what Jacko did for his bank balance. Those people are the ones who will continue to innovate and create new music for those that are interested, the rest of you can continue to listen to whatever pap Cowell and his cronies throw at you. Without Presley there would not have been a Jackson, anyone who understands the history of music will tell you that. My final comment on the subject, I promise.

Neither.   If I really had to choose between the two, it would be Elvis.  I can't listen to that weird gulping thing that jackson did without feeling sick.  If he's being played on the radio I turn it off.  I don't have either of them in my record collection.

for me Gary its Elvis ...he was THE king ,he changed a whole culture

MJ was a huge talent (a very faulted human though) but i dont think his music will stand the test of time compared to Elvis

i think an earlier comment alluded to MJ being the greatest entertainer of the 20th century ,perhaps there should be a seperate thread/debate on that but he doesnt come anywhere near

Oh dear. Find it really sad that people can't make sensible comments without using inflammatory words like "nonce". Smacks of desperation IMHO....

My grandkids are only interested in pop ? How could you possibly deduce this from my earlier comment? Curiouser &curiouser .At 7 & 4 , of course they should be strapped to their chairs for at least an hour every day and forced to listen to a wide range of music which of course would include the so called "King" ! This will be my New Year's resolution .

Maybe I don't "REALLY " care about music. Like art, I know what I like . End of. I shouldn't have to apologise to you or to accept your views . And as for the "pap" , I've already stated that I rarely listen to music these days but if my aged feet do make it to the odd disco, I know whose music gets me up & bopping.....

Neither Elvis or Jackson really float my boat. However, I won't deny that they both influenced the course of pop music.

Elvis isn't/wasn't ever a rock star though - he was a rock 'n' roll star.

I'm more interested in who was the greatest of the Three Kings - BB, Freddie or Albert!

Sorry, I wasn't clear - I said that in response to someone above who called Elvis a rock star - I wasn't saying Jackson was. I agree with you, he was a pop star.
  • I prefer Elvis's music. Although he died before I was born my mum was a fan so I grew up with him. Even before the accusations against MJ there was something about him that gave me the creeps, probably has something to do with the constant grabbing of his private parts.

I think they both left a lasting impression.

Also, why isn't Freddie Mercury a part of this? Surely he was as much of an inspiration?

And if Elvis hadn't have performed the songs they would be forgotton. How many people know who wrote Suspicious Minds? Or Heartbreak Hotel?

I'm not saying composition isn't important - in some cases more than others - but rock is essentially a performance art. Lennon/McCartney were composers but neither did anything outside the Beatles that matched the group's performances. Same with Jagger/Richards and the Stones, same with Jones/Strummer and the Clash and pretty much everyone else. Of course there are exceptions (eg Burt Bacharach) but knowing your way around a few chords, having a feel for the music and communicating it is where the genius is. Applies to Jackson as well as Elvis.
