It was a gay bar back in the 80s or 90s as well I think to try and calm it down, now that was a rough pub! There were guns clearly visible on a shelf under the beer pumps! There was a massive brawl outside O'neils a few years after it changed from being the Ferkin, must have been around 40 involved, all coked up to their eyeballs. The Royal bell was also rough as, not a Saturday night kicking out time passed by without someone getting glassed. That's been boared up for years now after being re-branded a few times. Ironically they didn't let me in when it was called BR1 because I was wearing white trainers!!

Ha, The Bell brings back memories, used to be in there after every game 10 years ago! Pamphalon (sp?) over the road from that as well, think its a walkabout now?! Got shut down for drugs, used to be as rough as as well.
  • The Pamph was actually a pretty decent pub, before it shut they introduced a vodka slush puppy machine. The Walkabout got shut down for drugs (no prizes for guessing which one, i swear the fresher up man doubled up as a lining up man!) as well and is now a TPs. interesting how the same thing happens for 10 years with different people.

the amount of stick it currently seems to be getting I keep expecting to see The Royal Oak on this thread !

Draughts on Eltham Hill is a funny place, know quite a few who drink in there (mainly those who previously drank in the Park Tavern)....it does have it's moments though !

Any pub in leicester square. Oast house at london bridge station is a diabolical excuse for a pub.
I'll take your Oasthouse and raise you The Boadicea (former Kent Connection) at Charing Cross. The place hasn't even got any windows ffs!

    The Boadicea is truly awful.
Came through Charing Cross tonight and the pub has been revamped. The same basic layout but cleaner with new furniture. It does a load of real ales and imported bottled beers. I had a quick bottle of Belgian Vedett white beer - very nice. Only downside is it's pricey. So this pub has moved out of the worst category.

Beckys Bar in Southwark Street circa 1980. Toilets were downstairs but everyone just went from the top - sold 130 different lagers and Becky was about 90 and used to serve through a couple of barrels on the bar. Classic....

After The Bramcote, another stupid away pub to visit...Queens over at West Ham. Felt out of place without a few tattoos or scars. The fellas were pretty weird as well!! ;-)

The Park Tavern, Passey Place, SE9. Joke of a pub.

The William IV in Croydon Road. Popped in their a few years ago to meet a mate. Some proper dodge pots in that place. Heard that they stopped pulling pints and were pouring it from cans!
  • What is/was the name of the pub right by the Blackwall Tunnel? Was that The Mitre? A bit of a dive, although I did see Zoot Money live there back in the 80's.

The pub was shite but the live entertainment in the club was great. Saw loads of great comedy acts down there. I'm sure Malcolm Hardee used to compere down there on a Sunday night.

The Tunnel Club was at the side of The Mitre. I saw the great Geno Washington there in the 80's.
  • Every pub in Forest Hill is (as of 2001) shameful, the forresters arms was a nightmare, the only highlight of that pub was when my brother shit his jeans on new years eve, when he thought he had pulled them down, he was very very drunk indeed. he was around 45yrs old at the time, his name is Mick, I hope he is reading this! The Porcupine in Mottingham Village (pretty sure its changed its name now though) - went in there for a pint 8 or 9 months back at about 5.30 Saturday afternoon with a pal. Walking up to the bar we immediately get "Are you old bill?"......."Ere Dave, couple of old bill wa**ers have just walked in".

I just wanted to say "f*** off you low-life ***** with but thankfully I was brought up not to act like an absolute twat
  • It didn't help that you had a blue uniform and a pointed hat.

Yes I agree......The Porcupine in Mottingham is an absolute shyte hole...full of low life chavs with shaved heads, tatoos and earings (and that's just the women)...a truly awful awful pub, with clientelle to match.
Sad to say The Dutch House comes a pretty close second.

Another vote for The Porcupine. Unbelievably horrible clientelle.

Also mainly serves beer in plastic pint glasses in case of glassings. Never again.

Florida Addick......... The Forresters in Forest Hill had a major re-fit last summer and it's quite a nice pub now. Big screens for the footy, nice garden and good food.
    Very different clientelle to previously.

I do find it funny when people kick off about their pint to be topped up with 2-6ml of beer.

the old "porky" in mottingham went through a very reassuring phase of advertising that it was a "drugs free zone" ..presumably it wasnt at one time then ?

also daughter went to a party in their "disfunction" room and the locals picked on all the parents/kids ....class !

With regards to the Porcupine - they've gone back to serving beer in glasses and it isn't full of low life chavs with shaved heads, tattoos and earrings - because NO ONE GOES IN THERE!

All the locals go to the royal. The 2 pubs are owned by the same people and more money/time is being spent on the royal, thus leaving the Porky pretty much empty. We were in there on Christmas Eve and we were the only 4 in there.

Such a shame, as the space is great and it has THE best garden of any pub in South East London - guaranteed. It needs someone to get their hands on it and sort it out. Can't see the current owners lasting very long. The landlady is pregnant, the landlord seemed uninterested and miffed that the royal had guaranteed all the locals for christmas eve.

  • I assume that Downham Tavern has already been mentioned?
