You can tell how big a star someone is when you are genuinely shocked to read something like this and I am. RIP
You can tell someone is a star, when the get sympathy for being an addict. People see the average drug users as scum, what a difference a voice makes

very sad, RIP, didn't know she had drug problems, just remember her as a gospel singer who had a wonderful voice, I guess celebrity (can) corrupts

  • Sad news as she was a truely great singer. There aren't many that have her vocal range these days. The drugs and alcohol and being surrounded by yes-men is an all too familiar story, for the big stars unfortunatley. RIP.

  • RIP. Unfortunately, she never had the depth, style or raw emotion of her late cousin Dee Dee Warwick (sister of Dionne) whose voice could scorch the earth but was destined to live in the shadow of her sister who had the catchy, cutesie voice well suited to the songs churned out from the Brill Building in New York during the sixties.

Neither Dionne or Whitney could be classed as true Soul singers IMHO.

If you're in any doubt listen to Dee Dee's 1970 Atco recording with the Dixie Flyers , "She Didn't Know (She Kept On Talking)" and you'll understand what I mean.

It is so sad that so many talented people who have everything in that industry are able to throw it all away. It must be the culture and the feeling of indestrucability you have when you are at the very top, I don't know but sad all the same. I could say others may learn from this but that never seems to happen over the years.
  • A mate of mine announced her death a few years ago on facebook, not as prematurely as we thought.
Awful singer who spawned a million imitators on the Pop Factor. The Bodyguard is one of the worst films of all time. But sad to see someone die so young for whatever reason.
ps whenever anyone mentions Booby Brown I think of the Frank Zappa song.

  • Just been watching some Youtube clips of her gigs in 2010.

She simply couldnt sing I will Always Love You, breathless and let the crowd sing it for her.

    1994 clip was note perfect.

    Tragic waste.

Always sad when someone dies young. My thoughts go to her loved ones.

That said, she did nothing for me, other than sing a load of songs I wish I'd never had the misfortune to hear. What's the betting that that dreadful "always love you" song will be played at her funeral?

Sad that she died but lets face it what has she done , music wise , in the last 20 years?

I am surprised she lived that long tbh - talented and naive when she first came to light, but then became involved in that piece of crap Bobby Brown and it was only going to end one way. She reportedly blew $100m. Sad but a re-occurring fact of modern life in 'showbiz'.

she was privaleged to have the taltent, looks, fame and riches that 99.9% of people in the world will never get anywhere near. shame that the industry she has invested most in over the last 20 years is the criminal underworld of drug dealers!

Same as Ami Winehead, harsh but find it hard to sympaphise.

I can't abide the sort of music she did, but can't deny she had a voice.

Whitney Houston was an amazing singer in her prime. Not every ones cup of tea but certainly not awful by any standard.

Some lovely 80s pop songs and a great voice but some bad choices made-whatever walk of life you're in, stay off the crack!

    RIP Whitney.
