Carl Leaburn. Did Paul Mortimer come through our youth team?

I thought we picked him up from Fulham.
We did - after they released him.

One of the most talented but worst attitudes Mark Stuart .. he's better than Rob
  • Sorry, Kap - I loved Mark Stuart. Nothing wrong with his attitude, in my book. A very modest and rather shy lad is my recollection of him in his years at the Valley - whoops, Selhurst. (Unless you meant that his attitude wasn't forceful enough?)

This excellent thread revives so many happy memories of watching almost all of the players mentioned. But it just shows that, as Damon Albarn once said in a famous album title, modern life is rubbish. Just because it wasn't given the fancy name ''academy'' until the 1990s doesn't mean Charlton didn't produce great talent. The only difference is that we used to call them ''youth'' players rather than ''academy products''. And arguably our old-fashioned ''youth'' players did more for the club than our modern ''academy products'' have done!

Got to pick you up on one point - they used to be called Colts not youth players.
Sounds rather quaint now don't you think?

Chandler made his debut ( I think ) away at Reading, last game of the season. There was nothing riding on the game

Rashid Yussuff, Alex Stavrinou, Harry Arter did they play 1st team? Did Dean Chandler, I don't remember him. I offer you Linvoy Primus, Lloyd Sam, Shawn Newton, big Carl, and who was that other winger that went to Wimbledon?
    Mickey Bennett?

First class training for free my friend!! He also goes Chelsea and Charlton training! Next week he could be playing against Robin Van Persies under 7 team! I bumped into the man himself last night!

Enjoyed the Marvin Hinton profile MOG strange how as a kid every player looked over 6ft especially at centre half. Can't believe he was only 5'10 and a half - Too Short!

Marvin Hinton....what a superb talent he was...he had this uncanny ability to time his tackles so well (rather like Bobby Moore) and nearly always come away with the ball...even when doing a slide tackle and going off his feet....possibly the most 'composed and skilful' defender I've ever seen in an Addicks shirt.

As a kid, didn't Steve Brown start his career with Brighton?

I always thought Derek Hales was a man monster. When he did an appearance in the club shop a couple of years back, I was shocked to discover he is shorter than my son.

    Did you chin him?

Or at the very least ask him how he never got sent off for kicking out prior to scoring THAT goal at The Valley?
