A beard instead of a face, it seemed to me at the time. Keith Peacock tells a great story about said beard frosting up during a match at Oxford, after which the players were given scotch to revive them because it was so cold. Think Eamonn made his debut in an evening KO at The Valley without having met his teammates before the game.

I could be wrong on this, but I think he played against us for Blackburn Rovers in the same season that we signed him. A midfield player that was tenacious and could play a bit as well. Also sure he had longish hair which was the style of the time in the 70's.

Loved him looked like a marauding pirate. Good player for the level we were at as I recall. How is he what is he up to these days

I loved Eamonn Rogers when I was kid one of my charlton idols. As I remember him he was great on the ball, and would often be able to pick out a clever simple pass to open up teams.
Yes he had a beard and looked a bit wild at times (!) as I recall but he was great :-)
  • If I remember rightly, he scored a goal direct from a corner in front of the covered end. The only Charlton player I've ever seen score direct from a corner kick. Right up there with Killer, Johnny Ostergaard and Peter Hunt in the best beard department.

Yes he did, I think he may even have scored ? Didn't we win 3-2 ?

    That's a brilliant description 3blokes, pure poetry!

I liked Rogers, thought he was classy.
  • Memory a bit vague but was not the great Barry Endean involved in the transfer, going other way to Blackburn, not sure if a fee was involved either way?
Was it not Eamonn and Phil Warman who were involved in a car accident that effectively finished ER career?
Good player and a rare Charlton international in those days.

Yes, I remember that, and remember the game as I was searched by a copper on the way in and he thought he'd found an offenive weapon in my coat pocket. Turned out to be a banana the missus had put in there for half time! As he pulled it out of my pocket and looked at it he said 'What's this?'. You do wonder about them sometimes!

I've checked Valiant 500 and it confirms that he was brought from Blackburn for £7,700 plus Barry Endean and was given a free transfer following the car accident referred to above. In his byline Colin Cameron says this .

'One could understand Theo Foley's delight when he secured the services of Eamonn in Oct 1971 because in terms of ability Rogers had everything in the author's opinion, and looked the ideal player to revive Charlton's flagging fortunes .Unfortunately ,it didn't work out for the Eire International forward which was all the more annoying because you were watching a talent that should have exploded into brilliance - but it was not to be.'

I'm not sure what's funnier March - the dopey copper or your wife putting a banana skin in your pocket for half time??!!!

We should have given them £7,700 for taking Barry Endean!

I only vaguely remember Eamonn to be honest. I do remember thinking he promised more than he delivered but we were woefully poor at that time to be fair so not entirely surprising.

Stuart Leary used to score directly from corners....I saw him do it on several occassions.

He did too, with his flowing brown hair and bushy beard!

Had a softly spoken full on Irish accent.

Remember coming back on the train, supporters and team mixing together, after getting hammered 5-0 at Plymouth Argyle.

The train broke down at Taunton to cap a typical awayday, but more than made up for being able to talk to the players.....the Theo Foley regime was always very open and sociable.

    Must have been Feb/March 1973.
