Where do we need to strengthen?

Obviously Chris Powell will always look at all areas and see what becomes available, but where do you think we definitely need to strengthen for the Championship?

I think we could do with finding a ball winner to command central midfield, as Hollands and Stephens especially can look weak when we haven't got the ball. From the squad I'd say we have a decent number of players who can do a job in the Championship - Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Taylor, Cort, Wiggins, Wagstaff (if he leaves the refereeing to the referee), Hollands, Stephens, Jackson, BWP, Yann. Sullivan, Evina, Pritchard & Haynes should also be able to do a job as cover/competition. So we just need to add to that really, wherever we can find a bit more quality. I wouldn't sign Russell or Cook, but N'Guessan could be a useful, versatile squad player.

A striker, central midfielder (perhaps two, given the demands of this position in a competitive league) and natural left winger, as well as a back-up right back would be good. I'd start Cort & Morrison as first choice centre halves.

We should look at Luton's 18 year old centre half Alex Lacey as a good young player to bring in and learn from Cort/Morrison/Taylor, as he could become the player that Mambo sadly probably won't be.

    CB, CM, CF...

    Cover at RB, LM

I also think the CF has to be a first choice to partner YANN who has 20 goals in him

Hopefully if BWP can do it then happy days but I'm not sure he can.

You may be right about BWP at Championship level. Hopefully we can add to our attacking prowess so that we have 3-4 strikers who could get into double figures next season.

Adlene Guedioura is a central midfielder at Wolves who is out of favour, but got good reviews on loan at Forest since January.

Some good premier defenders are out of contract: CB .. Caulker (Swansea) and Knight (Bolton) (one young , one oldish) .. Midfielders from the Championship .. Koren (Hull), Dicker and Harley (Brighton), I like Drury and Martin both Ipswich ... Strikers .. Jackson (ex Gills, Norwich), Austin (Burnley) .. A few of these will demand high wages .. but .. 'If you pay peanuts .... '. I suspect that Chris Powell and co will sign a player or two that few armchair scouts have considered and who will turn out to be very successful.

    GK (cover)
    RB (cover)
    CB
    LB (cover)
    RM
    CM
    LM (cover)
    ST

Wherever not marked cover I assume these will be starting spots up for grabs and therefore priority positions.

Assuming that: Sullivan, Doherty, Hughes, Alonso, Euell, Clarke and Hayes depart and probably some of the kids like Mambo and Popo
  • Bwp said to me last night he reckons he will find it easier in the championship to score.....

Sullivan said we are looking to bring a new keeper in and he wants to go out on loan somewhere.

I think we need to strengthen the paper so that we can make better aeroplanes.

Peterborough have released goalkeeper Joe Lewis .. a few seasons ago he was in full England squads .. what's happened to him ?. If his attitude is right and he's fit, he could be a great signing

Providing Sullivan is happy at the club, knowing he's No2, then I can't see the need to bring in another keeper. Won't get much better as a bench warmer............

I was just speculating that IF as January states, Sullivan is going as 'we're looking for another' keeper; Gough has gone, Pope may need another year or so to develop, there could be a need for a good keeper in reserve and to keep Hamer on his toes
  • He did say we are getting a new gk so he will be looking for a new club probably just on loan. Reckon pope is the real deal as well....

CB, CM, RM, ST - all better than what we have. Maybe two strikers as I expect Hayes will be sold.

CB might be someone that can cover right back, if not a young right back with some experience as competition for Solly. Same on the left of midfield and possibly goalkeeper, competition for Jackson and Hamer. I doubt the young players are seen as ready yet, expect them to go out on loan and play reserves games.

I want us to really push on again, it's going to be a tough league with the 3 that come down, 3 missing out in the play-offs, clubs like Leeds, Leicester and Brighton looking improve on this season and of course Wednesday coming up with us.

I don't want us to hope BWP scores 20+ or Haynes takes his place, Waggy and Green really improve - if we can find better we need to sign them, assuming right price, attitude etc of course.

Last summer we needed a team that could compete in the Champ, depending on how long the board want to wait we will need a team that can compete in the Prem.

Scoham has it pretty much right. Centre back to replace Doherty. We need four. Keep Hughes as right back cover and squad. The most important ones are the two midfield. Centre mid playmaker is absolutely essential and I think we could struggle without a quality signing here. Right midfield would be nice but I do think Waggy and Green can do a decent job. The real iceing on the cake would be a top draw striker. Might make the difference between mid table and playoffs. My feeling is we will see two strikers in.

Defintely a goalie to back up Hamer, maybe a fourth CB and defintely cover for Solly. would be nice to get another striker but with Yann and BWP he would have to be top notch to displace them two. Hope we keep Danny Haynes love that boys pace
  • Would like to see wingers come in for both sides and Jackson to drop into centre mid. If we ever need some energy in the middle then drop pritchard in.

In regards to bringing other players in maybe an upgrade to a darrell russell type player and cover for both wing backs

Obvious ones are RB, CB, CM, LM, ST
Replacement for Sullivan also seems likely
Interesting one will be RM; with Waggy, Green and Haynes able to play there I think at least one would leave if, as i suspect, we will sign someone of proven championship quality there. I can see Green being let go.

BWP won't cut it in the championship, and I'm not convinced Haynes is a natural finisher. Players such as mambo, popo and Izquierdo will probably stay as they're setting up a youth league, 18-21 years old I believe, so they'll stay and play in that. I'd like us to bring in some experience

We have to have a balanced approach which doesn't crowd out the possibility of a young player upgrading to the first team.

    Ephraim for a start
I posted on another thread that I sat next to Hogans cousin (it's what he told me) at The Valley on Saturday and he said That Hogan would jump at the chance of joining us. Said he wanted to come on loan in January but was made to go to Bristol City. Might be rubbish but it's what I heard.

    1. Experienced GK to push Hamer.
    2. Commanding CB to challenge the three that are already here.
    3. One or two top quality CMs. (this is the priority IMO)
    4. One or two creative/tricky wingers or wide players, one for either wing.
    5. A proven Championship goalscorer.

A luxury would be cover for either full back positions as I think it'll be hard to improve upon Solly/Wiggins for anything less than £2m.

All the same, if a player comes up in any position that is better than we already have, we MUST take them. There is no room for sentiment unfortunately.
  • I have a feeling we'll keep Russell and Haynes.
I'd like to see some more creativity added to the midfield or wide areas and another top drawer striking option.

Caulker is on loan from Spurs and they will be looking to integrate him next season. Perhaps not in the same way as they have been able to with Walker but he certainly won't be far down the pecking order there.

    LW.
As much as I love JJ and think he is a great captain, his pace is not championship level. Which is fair enough, he is a LM not a winger. But I think we need a player able to worry defenders with his pace. Sort of a combination of Haynes and Green but on the left.
Not too much to ask is it?! :)

Last couple of games before he dropped out and last two games have shown that Taylor won't cut it in the championship and like Nelson at Norwich should be moved on. As previously said BWP won't cut it next year and we need a dominant midfielder. Bostwick and Wilson at Stevenage fit bill. Left side as well needs attention as JJ is I fear too injury prone. Good striker essential but like Haynes to be given a chance.
