As Gerrard is captain, that means he has to play, so Lampard is out of the equation UNLESS Gerrard plays the holding role. Those marauding runs he's done for Liverpool seem to be in the past.
    Hart
    Johnson Terry Lescott Cole
    Gerrard Parker/Barry
    Lampard
    Walcott Young
    Defoe/Carroll

Similar to how most of the top teams in the PL line up.

Just seen this on FB, any truth in it?

"so roy hodgson mentions oxlade-chamberlain's performance against milan where "he dealt with pirlo" very well. this is the same pirlo who's been playing for juventus all season !"
Seriously, who gives a flying f***

not sure how standby works but I would be inclined to take another striker particularly with the Rooney ban, and sacrifice a defender to standby, perhaps a full back
We have only 7 defenders going as it is, Jones is there to cover two postions.

sure but defenders arent used as much for substitutions, so can be on standby

Sorry if it has already been said, but how can you pick Andy Carrol? The bloke has been laughed at all season for being a £35m flop, yet we pick him!! Oh well, enjoy the first round, we won't make it past that.

All in all, not too bad, can't see why Downing and not (Say) Adam Johnson, but much as I expected.

Just read that Sweden have left out a teenager who banged in 20 goals for Feyenoord in the Dutch league. I really think it will be very tough for England to get out of the group stages with that squad. France look far stronger, Sweden I don't know too much about apart from a couple of class players and Ukraine will be tough in their backyard.

Roy loves a 4-4-2 and I don't expect him to change that. IMO this'll be the XI barring injuries:

    -----------Hart------------
    ---Johnson Terry Cahill Cole---
    Young Parker Lampard Downing
    -------Gerrard Carroll-------

Gerrard could drop into the "hole" and play more of free role, like Dempsey had previously done under Hodgson at Fulham.

No one has managed to make a Gerrard-Lampard midfield work, and I can't see Roy changing that either.

you're probably near the mark there, but surely if one thing has been obvious over the past 2 regimes it's that Lampard and Gerrard don't play well together. I hope Roy bites the bullet and picks only 1 of the 2. The shame is they are two of the best players that England has produced over the past 20 years.

And so it goes on...what isn't predictable is sheer idiocy. Nothing against Roy,he will fail unspectacularly with great dignity.

Having said that,I can see us failing to even progress from our group.
Will still watch every minute though.

Unbelievable decision to take Welbeck instead of Sturridge. Welbeck is pony!

Well one thing is for sure. No one will be mouthing off about us winning it this time round like we do every other competition! Carroll is a joke, Downing has done nothing. If you're Daniel Sturridge or Adam Johnson right now you would not be too happy about being left out for a cart horse and a bloke who can't cross. Going into a competition with the least amount of optimism. Ever!

With this squad the public things they're shite. Could be world-beaters as the average monkey on the street has believed every other England squad has been someplace between "in with a shout" to "stitched on" to win the various championships that they've embarassed themselves/caused hilarity in.

Biggest joke is having Henderson on standby, he is total crap - i'd rather have carrick/britton/scholes or any number of alternatives.

Don't understand Johnson ahead of Richards or picking Downing (He has like 0 goals/assists) Bit surprised Lennon/A.Johnson/Sturridge isn't in ahead of him.

We're gonna struggle in CM without Wilshire especially if Parker isn't fit, we have no pace and if we happen to play germany again i can see them running by Barry once more :(

Oh well, Andy Carroll will win us this...

This is the first time ever I have believed England won't qualify from the group stages. Andy Carroll has had 125 minutes of decent football all season. Stewart Downing has not scored or made an assist in 36 games this year. Defoe and Wellbeck are third or fourth choice strikers for the current clubs.

Absolutely no chance. And Jordan Henderson????!!! Even on standby. What the fcuk!

I feel like screaming! Downing is garbage and couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo, Stevie me and Lampard will no doubt get in one anothers way as they have done for the last 10 years. Everyone will run straight past Barry and Terry will be undermining the captain and the manager. So normal England tournament then! Hodgson had a fine chance to change things permanently and he bottled it. I don't think I'll bother watching

On the bright side we might do so badly that all the old guard are retired permanently.

On the Carrick issue I read this on the Guardian's website

Another potential option, Michael Carrick, was not considered after the 30-year-old had asked not to be included if he was to play only a bit-part role. Carrick is effectively now retired from international football, though he would be available in extremis in future if required. "Michael had made it clear in the past he didn't want to be involved [as a fringe player]," Hodgson said. "As it is, I'd have to be convinced he was better than the four I've selected, and that he'd be happy to come out of retirement, if he was to be considered."

So I guess that is why Henderson is on standby. Really when you look at it where there that many others Roy could have picked? Possibly Leon Britton apart from him I'm struggling for English midfielders good enough
