Thrown over a hedge?

I'm reading a book called "Matchday" by Chris Green. It is centred around various people's matchday experiences, one of whom is(was) the chief executive at Norwich, Neil Doncaster.He is quoted as saying " The chief executive at Charlton was was picked up and thrown over a hedge a few years ago". The book was written in the 2004/05 season, anybody able to corroborate this quote, as it doesn't ring any bells with me?

    Neil Doncaster is now Chief Executive of the SFA.

    I met him once when he was CEO at Norwich City when we were in the Premier League. He was an admirer of "the Charlton way" which was seen then as a model for aspiring Championship clubs.

    I have no idea what/who he is talking about.

    Varney was in fact Thrown into a Hedge not over it. The culprit was dealt with by the club at a later date.

    I don't know the actual story but my Dad asked me to correct the story from thrown over to thrown into so it was factually correct. A question probably for one of those bromley addicks meetings or whatever.
