yeh todorov missed a penalty...i hate penalty misses (actually missing the goal)...tells me the blokes low on confidence. we had walker and iwelumo upfront. anyone got any news on the other game tonight?sounds like we had a weaker team out against the shots anyway.

Iwelumo and Walker started. Todorov came on late. Reid and Thomas replaced Holland and Faye late on as well. Todorov missed a penalty.

With the amount of changes made to the team from the Gillingham game, a bit of a disjointed let down was always on the cards - Not many of tonights starters will be in the 1st XI on the 11th (unless there is a departure or two).

sounds to me that with injuries, the fixture plan has not been ideal to us and tonight on both accounts was a 'papering round the edges' job.

Saturday against Braga will give us abetter indication of where we stand

I thought our defense played well but the midfield and attack were crap. Didn't look like scoring until Ambrose, Reidy and Thomas came on. Aldershot looked much more like scoring for most of the game.
If that was our second string we had better hope for no injuries to the first team.

One thing I noticed at half time the subs (i.e. the first team) were having a great laugh with each other kicking the ball around. Looks like squad morale is great, hopefully a good sign.

  • So far the common factors in these friendlies is that the defence looks good with few goals conceded and perhaps morale in the squad is ok.

Agreed, Holland & Faye in central midfield were particularly ineffective. Christensen & Sinclair were also fairly anonymous out wide. Ithough Walker battled well up front but big Chris didn't win a ball in the air all night against the two giant Aldershot centre halfs. I am not at all convinced by Iwelumo so far, he seems to lack both pace & strength!!

Ambrose & Todorov improved things enormously when they came on & it was a great through ball from Ambrose that sent Todorov through to win the penalty.

Moo2kil was excellent & showed real pace, in attack as well as defence. McCarthy was dominant & Fortune was, well....., Fortune!!

All in all Charlton never really got out of 2nd gear and it was a pretty insipid performance. 0-0 was a fair result.
  • Seemes my kids were right to feel that The Simpsons movie was going to be more fun!

BTW- best line of that film- along the lines of "amazing how we can get people to pay for something they can get for free on the TV")
  • Oh I dunno, I pissed myself at Homer's 'Spiderpig' song!

I was bluetoothed it in the pub on Sunday. I'll take it off the phone tonight and email it if you want - or can b/t it to you on Saturday if you're going.

Me too. Love the Simpsons but the film was too stretched and not enough of subtle jokes and references that make it so good on TV.

After "disappointing" performances, sports people always tell us how they can LEARN from them. Here's what I learned from the Aldershot game:
We just can't be left in any games with a central mid duo of Holland & Faye; neither have the necessary change of gear or direction, and will at best grind out a draw. (ok we already knew that)
Walker looks some way off first team quality, despite his whole-hearted apparoach. Sadly, the same could be said of Iwelumo, though I guess he managed well enough last season. Hope he's a route-one option for 20 mins, but he didn't win as much in the air as I expected.
Sinclair is far better suited to an industrious central role - not a wide man.
We need Thomas, Ambrose and Reid fit & on form to pose a genuine threat.
On a more positive note, Moutouakil really is very quick, and can hopefully spend plenty of time deep in oppo territory esp in home games.
And finally - SW Trains have a wonderfully timeless book of excuses. Our hold-up en route to Waterloo was attributed to a steam engine ahead of us!

At least you were only a few minutes late, the steam train was 42 years late!
