Addicks reject Clarke bid
Oldham understood to have failed in offer to land striker
Last Updated: July 9, 2012 6:56pm

Sky Sports understands Charlton have turned down an offer from Oldham for striker Leon Clarke.

The 27-year-old joined the then League One side in January of this year, and was later loaned out to Crawley in March, in a deal that ran until the end of the season.

Oldham boss Paul Dickov is keen to improve his striking options before the start of the new season.

And the experienced Clarke fits the bill of someone that can lead the line and score goals in League One.

Clarke enjoyed a brief spell on loan at Boundary Park earlier in his career where he snared three goals in five appearances.

Dickov would be delighted to land a striker of Clarke's quality but Charlton have rejected a bid for his services.

Red the OP quickly and thought Oldham had offered a "Free £10 bet" for him. The worst part is I thought it was a good deal !

Perhaps they've been reading this forum and thought they'd get their way with a piss-taking offer.

Anyone want a conspiracy theory ?....

...Maybe SCP knows he isn't getting much investment so is determined to at least keep hold of what he has. "Clarke's terrible" he might think "but he's better than nothing".

Debateable. Would imagine we would want a fee of what ever we thought Benson was valued at. After all it was a straight swap. £75-100K ?????

Surely if we have money problems to the extent some suggest then we would have sold Clarke like a shot. I don't buy the idea that he's being kept on for when the shit hits the fan and we lose BWP and Yann. Surely we'd get shot of anyone saleable and use the (promising) kids we've got?

    The plot thickens.....................

Only if Clarke's wages were equal or more than Bensons, otherwise we've already made money from the deal.

In honesty I assume Oldham offered nothing and may even have asked us to pay off a portion of the players wages.

I'll be surprised if he's still here by the time the transfer window closes.

Tbh I'm shocked that any league one club are looking to spend money these days. Plenty of out of contract players as good as Clarke knocking around I would think ?

Oldham are not exactly flushed, would have been a fairly nominal offer I'd imagine.

He will surely go soon, just depends how much we want for him and whether anyone in L1 can afford him.

As bad as he is I reckon Powell still sees him as a different option that we don't really have elsewhere. Big, strong bloke etc. Can see why he would want a fair deal for him and not let him go for nothing.

Don't get all this Clarke bashing, was unfit when he came to us but clearly had something about him as he had scored loads at Chesterfield. Big, strong, not very fast but has a powerful shot, not too dissimilar to Kermo. He probably isn't as classy as Kermo but as a 4th/5th choice striker in the Championship he'll do.

I thought we had already offloaded Clarke? How long does his current deal with us have to run?

This makes me wonder again about the money issues, if we had a cashflow problem surely we would be looking to grab any cash available for peripheral players like Clarke?

exactly, clubs with cashflow problems don't turn offers for 5th/6th choice striker whatever he may now be

There must be summat that SCP sees in Clarke, when he came on I thought he was so unfit as he was blowing hard after ten mins worth of play but after a SCP per-season training, who knows?! But I think that it's a hope too far and look forward to being proven wrong here...

Regarding the fitness issues wasn't that one of the reasons he got beaten up by Paolo because he said he didn't want to do more running in training?

Personally i don't think Clarke or Haynes were really given a chance, but thats not surprising considering we had Kermorgant and BWP. Haynes is lightening quick and Clarke showed glimpses of promise IMO. If Clarke were to go i wouldn't be disappointed, but in the same sense it wouldn't bother me if he stayed. I wouldn't want to lose Haynes though.

when haynes did come on he was threatening. when clarke came on he did nothing.

i cant see anything in clarke that would make me want to keep him.
