Maradona - Eng v Arg 1980, ManU v Barca 1984, FLCentenary Match 1987, Ossie Ardiles

I was at the centenary match but Platini stood out for me. Absolute class and I think he'd retired by then.

in charlton colours has to be Scott Parker, think he would have been one of the best midfielders in the world if he stayed with us another year or so and went to man utd as roy keane's like for like replacement.

Charlton, Scotty Parker, Mark Reid, Colin Pates, Claus Jenson, Steve McKensie (when he got himself fit), Super Clive, Jim Melrose (of course!)
  • I remember Paul Kitson being utterly umplayable for West Ham in 2002 or so. Bagged a hattrick having not scored a goal in the about 3 years, in fact I think the last time he scored before that was the winner for us v Palace! Everything he hit went in that day!

Gazza for spurs at selhurst 1989. Unplayable as I recall, really took the piss, but still great to watch.

Ah yes Paul Parker playing for Fulham. He only looked about 5ft 7 but won everything in the air.
The best has to be Gasciogne though , the little cameo when he came on for Newcastle and the games at Selhurst with Spurs. The skill and strength he could do stuff on the pitch nobody else could. Makes me so sad he threw it all away.

  • Enough of the cack players on other threads. How about the best players you have ever seen, in the flesh, so to speak. Mine:

Maradona - very young, for Argentina v England at Wembley 1978
Karl Heinz Rumenigge - W Germany
George Best - even pissed, fat and at Fulham, a class apart
    Bobby Moore - as above
    Socrates and Zico for Brazil
Ruud Gullitt - for Netherlands v England at Wembley
Ryan Giggs - best ever performance against us at the Valley, in the 3-3 draw
Rodney Marsh - wanker, but a very talented wanker, for QPR at the Valley

  • Around about 1989@selhurst Gazza went thru our defence +scored a wonder goal

I saw Riquelme and Messi for Argentina against Chile 2007... before Maradona was manager i think, so that would have been another name. Salas played for Chile, but was well past his prime.

    Buffon / Maldini / Nedved / Messi.

Also seen Maradona kick a ball, if that counts.
  • Earnshaw when he came on as a sub and scored a hat-trick 4captain marvel(robson-WBA),I found it quite amusing in a macabre sort of way lol

Gazza at The Den. Millwall unbeaten at home for what seemed like years, near top of the Old Div 1 and he ran rings around us.

Beardsley for an unstoppable Newcastle heading for promotion was immense too.

Ronaldo wasn't bad in the Cup Final.

Stan Collymore was breathtakingly good - annoyingly.

Waddle, Linekar and Barnes (at Anfield) all deserve mentions.

And I was impressed with Beckham's passing range for England and the whole of the Brazil team's movement.

  • I saw Messi in last years Champions League Final - a mate works at Wembley :-)

Messi was unbelievable, he runs at players with such pace never looking at the ball, drops the shoulder and he's gone! He made Vidic look like an average League One defender!

Saw Maradona at Wembley in 79 or 80. England won 3-1 and he was about 17 but he was awesome.
Zidane v England in Portugal 2004.

Best English players - Gazza and Hoddle.

  • For Charlton: Paul Walsh (I agree with Big Bob on this one) every time he put on the shirt.

For an opposing team: Clive Allen when playing for QPR, whether at Loftus Road or the Valley. QPR 4 (Allen 3) Charlton nil (or perhaps one) tended to be the score.

Corrrect - I wrongly said 1978 on the opening post (which is of course when Argentina had recently won the World Cup). I was behind the goal where Maradona nearly scored after an incredible mazy dribble through the England defence. A taste of things to come in later World Cups! Never thought I would see a better player but Messi (only seen on tv so far) might just be one - I'm not decided on that question.

Some fabulous players and memories on this thread. We could put together a hell of a side just using those named!

Paul Gascoigne for Newcastle at Selhurst Park in 1988, came onstage half time and took over the whole game.
I remember that. He was class the way he could make space for him
self. Remember watching Viera do that against us at Highbury.

The goal that the young Rooney scored for Everton at the Valley was a sign of things to come

Giggs at the Valley was superb in that game when he hit the bar from half way. It was also probably the best game I have seen at The Valley

Ray Clemence seemed to have an extra pair of hands whenever he playeed against us, - it took three goes to put a penalty past him in 1985 up at Spurs.

    Johnny Summers, against Huddersfield.
  • Maradona in the football league v Rest of the World in 1987. Unplayable and ran the show. Made the likes of platini live in his shadow that day which was some feat.
