I may be completely naive, but what problem would people have with Elliott as Chairman?
    Genuine question.

As a football man, nothing at all. Same as if Peter Varney was chairman. But it just seems really odd, as generally the chairman has put a significant amount of money up just to get on the board, even if he's not necessarily the majority shareholder (and not necessarily a "he" either :-) ) Although Elliott's done alright for himself, I don't get the impression he has that sort of money lying around. It just seems like he's a figurehead being put up to deflect the flack from the real power behind the throne - and let's face it, would you want to cross him?

So Elliott would allow himself to be a stooge then...?

  • I dont think thats what ali was saying

Just that like slater elliott unless he has accumlated an incredible wealth that he is willing to gamble an amount of

Is being put in place for other reasons by someone else

But as someone in the clique is known to say ( yawn) I won't belive it until it's on the OS ...

Are you now saying Henry is in the clique, tonight is full of surprises!

    Ssssh, EastTerrace !

Didn't want to name names as Henry is probably quietly grieving about Waggy's loan move...

Don't like the sound of this.

Sounds like his colour will play a big part in it according to that...

Edit - Don't not like the sound of it because he's black, more the amount of times his colour and racism was mentioned in that article... It sounds like he would be 'The first black chairman' instead of 'Paul Elliot, Charlton chairman'

Are Public Enemy the new backers then?
  • If Chris Powell gets on with him ,and he can help move the club forward in some way , by attracting investment through his contacts , then that can only be a good thing in my book.
  • Will buy SCP a lot more time in role if it happens IMO

Which could open doors for some favourable investment by a company that is looking for a fully diverse and forward thinking club

You can not underestimate the potential that having someone like Paul Elliott and SCP in control of football may have on companies or individuals wanting to invest in a club and people

    depressing
  • My questions are that of why now on who's request

That will say more than Paul Elliott being given the task

Would be happy if he could help the club in ways you mentioned, just don't want him to arrive just so he can be 'the first black chairman'.

Mind, it's only a Mirror article.

We currently have a chairman who is a Man City fan and some people don't like that fact , we may / may not bring in an ex player as our next chairman , & yet still some people are never happy?

If his name was sheikh Paulo Elliott would we get a bit more excitable?

A football club more representive of modern football society with various local award winning schemes wouldn't hinder a potential buyer
  • I agree if it is for a publicity venture only then Paul IMO is undoing all the hard work he has done along with others in asking for black football people to be given roles on merit not skin colour

If true IMO it's going to have something bigger attached to it

I just don't see the sense otherwise

Look at what Elliot does now as a role for a man pushing race equality at the highest ends in football to a chairman of a championship club with limited funds not exactly the ingredients you would chose to prove yourself

  • I don't really care what colour our chairman is , black , white , green or even orange, as long as his heart and head are in the right place , thats what really matters.
  • Its a real shame that Mirror article doesn't mention the fact Paul Elliots black, and more so the fact that he could be the first ever black chairman.

No problems if true. Elliott doesn't strike me as someone who would be happy being a puppet or a pawn.

Going to tap up Dave White here as the last City Addicks was going to be Paul Elliot and R Rufus. He works with Paul in his Trust work.

So things have changed here. Be interesting to hear what Dave has to say? Dave??

I like the idea but exactly how much say would he have in the the running of the club considering he has no financial stake . Very little I would suspect .
  • Unless you have a serious cash interest in the club your chairman of invariably your there for someone else like slater was

Yep. And the fact that he's one of our own, bloody articulate for a former footballer, and built like the proverbial brick erm outhouse means that our fanbase are probably less likely to question him than a lot of other candidates. Except the minority who appear not to be able to see past his colour, of course :-(

I don't think he's a stooge, (and it'd take a braver fan than me to call him one on a forum, let alone to his face) but the people who put the money in are the ones with the real power. Even if they let him have a free hand with the day to day running of the club, the big stuff is going to be out of his hands.

    Explain
  • Or have the mirror just got it wrong and are trying to take a different stance on the JT and Anton issue by using Charlton

    Who knows

Interesting to watch this one unfold
