The Mirror is requesting fans from all clubs to let us know the cult heroes they took to their hearts for inclusion in a new book.
Maybe somebody could organise a poll and submit an entry for us.

    Depends what they mean by Club Icon or Cult Hero

    If we're talking unsung hero - Mark Reid. Not as flamboyant as Johnny H, but Mr Dependable.
    If we're talking mercurial genius - Paul Mortimer. Sometimes incredibly frustrating, at others unbelievably brilliant.
    If we're talking "should've played for England" then it has to be Richard Rufus
    If we're talking "man you're proud is associated with our club" it's a fight to the death between Keith Peacock and Chris Powell (or at least it would be if they weren't both too nice to indulge in such a thing)

    As a kid there was only one.

    I even painted a beard on my No.8 Subbuteo Charlton team.

    The likes of Killer do not count as 'cult heroes' for me. A cult hero is surely someone who has a bit of uniqueness to them and isn't an obvious choice. The likes of Kishishev, Semedo, Leaburn etc.

    I'm going to go with Richard Rufus for this. Never the superstar of the team but a great player and a true Charlton legend who took forever to score his first goal - but what a time to take it!

    In what way was Semedo either unique or a cult hero ?

    Well Hales is a very obvious choice for a discussion about who Charlton's greatest ever player is. That for me doesn't really reflect what a 'cult hero' is. Hero maybe, but not cult hero.

    Cult heroes generally divide opinion, and after many many years are generally looked back on with much more fondness and unanimous admiration.

    Kishishev divided opinion for a long time. Nobody rated his ability or real value, but we all look back now and have nothing but good things to say. Carl Leaburn also fits this mold perfectly.

    Semedo was a bit of a cult hero because he was loved by many (though quite a few will now pretend they didn't because of some childish dislike for Sheffield Wednesday), but he had his imperfections as well. But never at any point did people hold this imperfections against him. That for me is a cult hero.

    I actually think a player like Bradley Wright-Phillips will be seen in a similar manner in 10 years time. Not perfect and by no means everyone's cup of tea, but a real fan favorite

    Tom, I really hope that you are proved right in the long run but at the moment I'm not sure that BWP is quite a "real fan favourite". I'm sure that last season people preferred Kermorgant to BWP, whilst this year Fuller seems more highly rated. Like I say though, I'd love to be proved wrong.

    One of the first names you heard of years back associated with Charlton and he wasn't even playing was Sam Bartram.... so he gets my vote

    Cafctom. Maybe look up the definition of cult hero. You're mistaken if you think that it's "someone who divides opinion". It's the exact opposite. A hero who has that little extra in his character/persona.

    You say that hales should be considered in a best players poll and not a cult hero one is also wrong. There have been dozens of better players than him over the years but none rival his character or cult following

    I think there have been previous threads on Players who divide opinion.

    Semedo wouldn't reach cult status in his own family.
