Rob Elliot also wore 44 in the few matches he played last season.thai malaysia addick said:I think I am right in saying that I saw Dervite wearing 44 on Saturday against Brighton. Has anyone turned out in a higher number for Charlton?
I cannot recall seeing a higher number.0 -
Didn't Mills take 44 a few seasons back also?0
-
Jimmy floyd Hasselbaink 66 X X X X X XL0

I heard Darren Ambrose and Darren Bent liked number 69 when they were playing for us.0

Stuart Balmer wore No.1 one season. Not sure what relevance that has to this thread, but hey ho!0

Anyone know what's the highest numbered shirt worn in competitive football in England?0

At a guess.. Nico Yennaris at Arsenal (64)Callumcafc said:Anyone know what's the highest numbered shirt worn in competitive football in England?

According to wikipedia the highest worn shirt number is shared between Nico Yennaris and Abdul Razak who both wore 62.
Edit: Wiki must have got that wrong ISawLeaburnScore is right Yennaris wore 64 in a Carling Cup match0 -
really? i don't think so. Anyone verify this?Brendan_O_Connell said:Stuart Balmer wore No.1 one season. Not sure what relevance that has to this thread, but hey ho!

I think they did it in alphabetical order in 93/94 season, with Balmer taking 10

Yeah, there was defintely a season Balmer wore 1. think it was the first year of squad numbers in the football league and we did it alphabetically (logical enough I suppose) which ended up with Balmer wearing 1 and Bolder wearing 2. Looked weird.0

As GNelson says they deffo done it in alphabetical order one yearkafka said:

93/940

Absolutely he did, it was as others have said when squad numbers where first used and we as a club decided to go alphabetical, I still remember Brian Moore ranting on about the stupidity of it on The Big Match.kafka said:

52 has to be the highest in English football for a first team player (Bendtner) as the 60s were youngsters at Arsenal.0
-
argentina did the alphabetical squad numbering before us at the 82 world cup with ossie ardiles getting the number 1 shirt0
-
actually, looks like they did it in 78 too. ardiles got number 2 that time with midfielder norberto alonso getting number 10

There's an Italian player who wears 99. Can't remember his name. I guess that's the highest number you can wear...!0

Thought 88 got banned as it was linked to Neo Nazism?guinnessaddick said:Hooper wears 88 for Celtic.

As well as Cassano, the Brazilian Ronaldo also used to wear 99 for AC Milan.
I think Cassano wanted it because number 18 was taken (so went for 9+9 instead), but no idea why Ronaldo wore it... assuming 9 was taken and thought 99 was twice as good.0 -
All perfectly true, Sweaty did wear 1 for that season as his name was first alphabetically. The list in full:Brendan_O_Connell said:Stuart Balmer wore No.1 one season. Not sure what relevance that has to this thread, but hey ho!

Sunderland, Brum, Boro and Brentford were among others that also had squad numbers in 93-94 but not alphabetically.
I think Stuart may be the only official outfielder to wear 1 in English competitive league matches on a regular basis. David James was allowed to play outfield as a gesture by Man City when coming on as a late substitute and he wore a regular kit with his usual squad number 1 on.

Are you sure about this? there was one game where weaver was brought on and james was moved up front; it wasn't planned though so I would've thought he either borrowed a shirt or wore an unnumbered oneTommy Dowling said:David James was allowed to play outfield as a gesture by Man City when coming on as a late substitute and he wore a regular kit with his usual squad number 1 on.

Yes, Weaver came on for Reyna but it must have all been planned as James then changed into an outfield shirt with his name and number on. Man City were in their away kit despite the match taking part at the Etihad.rina said:
