I think yesterday was a bit different to be honest. It was a new ground, so there were a lot of Anorak, Train Spotter, Groundhopper types there.
Usually at away games we stand where we want (usually at the back) and let the people that want to sit down go down the front, that way everybody is happy.0 -

I think it depends on the situation. If you're sitting in the front row and there are people behind who want to sit then I think one should be respectful of that. However, I do think sometimes too much effort is put in by stewards trying to make the back few rows sit down when everyone's happy and they're not doing any harm.
I don't think it's right to expect everyone to stand at all away matches as this excludes certain people from going which then isn't fair.
Of course, if we had safe standing this wouldn't be an issue...(tin hat)0 -

It's a lot easier with unallocated seating, as then you can gravitate to your area (sedate at the front, standing at the back) but with all seats sold that wouldn't be practical0

I can see both sides. Pisses me off though when you get people who instantly shout others down for standing up for a tackle or a near-goal situation. Used to have one behind me in D Block, East Stand who would spout off if ever I stood up to cheer the boys on at a corner (when the ball was out of play). They then came on here and moaned about how I told them to "f*** off" and used to do it at every possible chance just to wind them up, which wasn't true.
I don't do it as much now I'm a little bit older! If you want people in front to sit down because its a bit of a struggle to be on your feet all game, or because you can't see then its fair enough. Have a quiet word and be polite about it, shouting "SIDDAARRNNN" isn't going to get you far.0 -
I sympathise on occasions but people don't help themselves.
There was a lot of standing initially last night and we were a row in front of an 86 year old who was being accompanied by people telling everyone they had no respect etc (if we had sat down, we'd not see anything). One of our group went out of his way to get a steward to see if there was a few seats near the front (which there were) but the old fella and his mates preferred to keep on moaning rather than move.
It's a difficult one but people don't seem to want/be flexible.0 -

There is no solution other than safe standing so that people have a choice. Moving those that want to sit down the front isn't ideal either - why should those who want to sit have an inferior view from closer to the pitch? I do accept that with the current all seater stadia that it's probably the best solution though.
Also, the "standing makes a better atmosphere" point always baffles me. It's not physically impossible to sing/shout whilst sitting down, so why do we always sing more when there's a larger standing contingent?0 -

There's usually a fair number of thermos flask types in our away crowd who'll take the front rows. I'm a halfway back type of fan (i.e. will stand and sing sporadically!)cafc4ever said:

It is definitely better/easier to sing, especially louder, whilst standing, hence why all music acts, choirs, opera singers, etc. stand to sing. How many stood yesterday roughly? Im a big fan of standing at away games, why did the Fulham game last year have such a good atmosphere? Because everyone stood....0

Games like last Night are terrible for it. I wasn't there but we sold out stevenage and bournemouth and the atmosphete was terrible because everyone sat down. Not more than a peep all game until we scored In injury time at bournemouth. We might as well not of bothered against stevenage as the players Probably didn't know we were there.
I avoided last nights game for this reason.

I would say about half stood last night? 1st half atmosphere was a bit tepid, 2nd half was good. English clubs should really follow the German model - standing sections (electric atmosphere, allows for more fans, cheaper tickets, completely safe design).
Controversial as it may sound the development of this will always be pegged back by Hillsborough and the PC nature of UK society.0 -
Seeing as its usually the older generation and those with young children that want to sit, perhaps the club could allocate tickets for these people at the front. Others who are more likely to stand be allocated a seat further back in the stand?0

This would be the smart thing to do but then this would be seen as condoning 'standing behaviour' which I think they prohibit.Kap10 said:

From my point of view, it was a shame when everyone around me sat down after about a minute, but I was in row G, so that was that.
On a lighter note, I said to my daughter, "You should stand up when we chant 'Stand up if you love Charlton'."
Her reply, "But I don't love Charlton. When they chant 'Stand up if Charlton is your favourite team' I'll stand up."0 -

I still prefer to stand so gravitate towards the back. Do get a bit annoyed when someone gives it the 'siddarn' when you've spontaneously jumped to your feet at an exciting bit of action. Sometimes you just can't help but react.0 -
