Great stuff from Powelly. Simply just a happy bloke.0

Nice to see alot of referring back to charlton from SCP , too many times have managers / players been on tv with out even talking about charlton0

I was interviewed by Mark Bright for Grandstand when we were relegated from the Championship. He was a really nice guy, said a lot of great stuff about the club and enjoyed his time with us playing a crucial role. Cant understand the negativity.0
-
Very impressed with tonight's show and Jackie Oakley is a really good presenter.0

Note how CP kept looking across at Brighty, as if to say 'Aint it so, bro?' Both having been involved in the club, under Curbs, they both locked in to the vibe at CAFC, and recognized that (a) the vibe had been lost in recent times and (b) it has been resurrected since, and by some decent margin, too.
I care not a jot that both were (are?) in some people's eyes, 'Nigels', for both fought hard (valiantly, indeed) for the Charlton cause, and the body language on tonight's TV showed that both recognise the true value of that cause. I have not a bad word to say about either man.0 -
Lovely to see that old footage from 1962, particularly of the great Stuart Leary. Unfortunately he finished playing for us just before I started going to the valley as a boy. He was and still is my dad's favourite Charlton player.0

Thank god we don't have to watch it in black and white anymore you could barely separate the two sides, I presume the other team were in blue?.

didnt realise Bright played for the scum 3 times on loan in 1996
are there many who have played for all 3 SE London teams0 -
Go to the BBC iplayer and search on late kick off, all the different regions are available.CAFC1304 said:Bugger, live in Surrey so it's the South one. Does anyone know how I can find the Chrissy Powell one?
Never knew that old footage existed, that was one of the games John Hewie played in goal during an injury crisis. For those who haven't studied their Colin Cameron books he was an outfield player! I'd guess Plymouth were in green, which gave the grey vs grey effect.

Peter Burridge ,Tony Hazell,Darren Ward and surprisingly Jonathan Obika have also played in the first team of all three.
Others like Nathan Ashton and Leon Cort both played for us and Palace but never made the Spanner's first team although they spent time there.David Tuttle played for the other 2 but had a gameless loan spell with us.
There are others who have connections with all three for example Tony Burns kept goal for us and the Nigels and was until last season the Spanners goalkeeping coach.Nicky Johns has worked for Crystal Palace in a football in the community role after playing for Charlton and Millwall0 -
I think the opposition was Plymouth who would have been in Green although our stand in keeper John Hewie, would have worn blue, green being the traditional colour for keepers and yellow in international matches only in those days. I used to stand behind the railings in that corner where the punch up was. Winger Sammy Lawrie who lost it was only 5'3 ish Scottish and firery. Think he used to live in one of the pair of houses the club owned in Harvey Gardens just to the right of the exit from the East Stand.Halix said:>Lovely to see that old footage from 1962, particularly of the great Stuart Leary. Sounds good show going to watch it before I go to work0

Thanks for the tip about the show. Just watched it and CP is such a gentleman: eloquent and so humble. I thought Jackie was a great presenter and put in so much passion.
Great footage and it swept me back to watching in black and white! How did we do it! It should definitely be included on the progress thread.0 -

The most interesting thing that came out of that interview for me was the answer to the question "why did Curb's teams always have an end of season slide" and the answer was that Curbs targeted a points total and once that was reached the team slackened off.0

I've probably sky+ed the wrong one again!
I remember reading the Metro after the goal that never was scored at Watford. He claimed that referees shouldn't be expected to know all of the rules. He's a wolly.0 -

It's a shame the BBC didn't come up with this 1962 footage when we did the centenary DVD - the pictures of Leary and of Hewie in goal would have been great, and Mike Bailey was also in the team. We were desperately short of film from this era. From recollection it was expensive to copy what they did have on to videotape, but I don't think this was ever listed and it would have been well worthwhile.0

that is a shame. Is there any specific reason why there is so little footage available of us from this era?Airman Brown said:It's a shame the BBC didn't come up with this 1962 footage when we did the centenary DVD - the pictures of Leary and of Hewie in goal would have been great, and Mike Bailey was also in the team. Lawrie lived in one and Long John in the other.RedChaser said:

Yes. If there is that fantastic old footage there may be more. Also there is a 1-1 at Millwall (Crawford) knocking about which I would love to see but haven't.
Salted away in LKO was Chris comment about Harriott in that the other (already established) players like him. Significant in as much as it shines an extra light on intergration within a team or squad, presumably from a new signing as much as a youth product. Chris is mindful regarding squad harmony, which is not a huge suprise when you consider the great collective ethic he has instilled.
It would not be a good idea to mess with it too much by signing a series of bertie big bollockses.0 -
Because we were rarely on the TV ?HerneBayaddick said:

I think some of the ambivalence regarding Bright dates back to the time when Scally (the Gillingham chairman) was losing it about the Valley Express service "stealing" Gillinham's support. Mark Bright, when asked for his opinion, and with no consideration of the actual facts of the matter, said he thought what Charlton was doing seemed wrong.0
