West Germany v Algeria 1982 World Cup0

Hudds keeper apparently had the ball from a pass back at his feet for ages in opposed cant blame them tbh seeing at some stage today both teams were in the drop zone

They did what they needed to, fair play.0
-
Fair enough but did they know that the Palace game had finished or something?
A late equaliser for Posh against Palace would've sent Barnsley down. A bit odd, you'd think they would still be looking for a winner at that point.0 -
Well, it's not cheating is it? I mean, it's not as if they're throwing the game or anything.0

...or offering an old friend fifty quid to miss a pen.0

It reminds me of a very important game back in the Euros 2004 when Sweden and my country Denmark played each other in the final game of the group stage. We already knew before the game that 2-2 would secure playoff spots for both the teams, no matter what result Italy would get against Bulgaria in the other game. Our Scandinavian neighbours have always been big rivals, it dates back thorughout history - our football matches are always very intense. Both teams played for the victory, a very close game. Sweden would equalize in injury time to 2-2, which made the players relax for the last minute or so. Both Sweden and Denmark were ecstatic, because we had gained access to the playoffs, and we were also very happy for each other - Italy though, accused us for match fixing and rigging, which were complete nonsense.

The ball was in play. No law was broken.
Quite bizarre to watch though.0 -
Bit sad to be honest0

While its not against the rules I think its wrong. You should always try and play to get the best result possible.0

That's just it though ......it's apparent that they knew Peterboro had lost, so both teams already had the best result possible - safety from relegation.Addickted4life said:While its not against the rules I think its wrong. You should always try and play to get the best result possible.

Very unsporting. Both sets of supporters singing " Yorkshire" after.

If they knew Peterborough had lost though even one of them losing still wouldn't have made a difference, or at least not to Huddersfield.Oggy Red said:

If it was us then acceptable, otherwise un sporting0

I find it disgusting. Huddersfield were not going down so conspired to keep Barnsley up. I'd not want our club to be part of this and I doubt our manager would have any part in this shit.0
-
It would have been funny if POSH had actually scored an equaliser!
Mark Bright when covering our match said somebody should have hacked down the Leeds guy who scored their 2nd which sums up the real value of fair play and sportsmanship in the game...

Any score that knocks Italy out is a good score in my book.sasquatch said:It reminds me of a very important game back in the Euros 2004 when Sweden and my country Denmark played each other in the final game of the group stage. With Barnsley v Udd, it could quite easily have back-fired on both, as the Palace game hadnt finished.0 -
Can't say I find it that offensive myself. Keeps me a couple of local games next season.0
-
As @Callumcafc wrote It would have been a dangerous game to play ... one very late Posh goal and Barnsley would have gone .. also, Palace scored their winners in the last 10 minutes of the game0
-
Don't blame them at all. The job was done, if one team had attacked and then the other did "a Doncaster", or a player had got a career ending injury in the last minute how daft would that have been?0

Spot on sure we would have done the same in a similar situation.Danny Addick said:They did what they needed to, fair play.

The Italians accusing others of match fixing. Classic! Those who live by the sword...sasquatch said:It reminds me of a very important game back in the Euros 2004 when Sweden and my country Denmark played each other in the final game of the group stage. It could have made a difference - if Barnsley had conceded in that last minute of non-football, then Barnsley would have been relegated on GD (thanks to our 6-0 win) instead of Peterboro.LargeAddick said:

When Luke Steele was holding onto the ball he was kicking it from foot to foot and the ball wasn't dead; it was an open play situation. You usually only get booked for time wasting if the ball is in a dead ball situation. The keeper was knocking the ball around from foot to foot and no other player wanted the ball. so the ref can't really do anything. But I suppose technically it's slightly unfair play but there doesn't seem to be a rule saying can't do that. It could have backfired though if Peterborough had got a late equaliser at Selhurst.0

It's cheating in the sense that it is against the spirit of the game. Teams sign up for a 46 game competition and should see it out. I think powell has too much respect for the game for cafc to ever do this under his stewardship.0
-
Seems majorly wrong to me - and I'd be a bit ashamed if we stayed up due to similar shenanigans. I wonder what the Posh fans think?
I don't necessarily think it's anything new though, sure I've read about similar. (Perhaps not in our history, but I'm thinking of Sheffield United for some reason..)0 -
Each team has to look after their own interests and with hudders v barnsley it eventually worked out that a draw was good enough for both sides
If we were in the same situation I'd be more than happy with that outcome0 -
It happens in Italy all the time. I've seen it live at a Cesena v Torino match a few years back. Great game- 2-2 then fans started leaving with 10 to go. Couldn't believe it! But both teams spent those 10 minutes passing in midfield. They had clearly decided a draw suited them both. Italian fans just accepted it - that is the danger.0

The most notorious one was Coventry v Bristol City in the late 70's. They were in a relegation scrap with Sunderland and were drawing 2-2. Sunderlands game finished with them losing 2-0 with about 5 minutes still to play at Coventry. As it stood, Coventry and Bristol survived and Sunderland went down. So, Coventry put the Sunderland score up on their scoreboard and the 2 teams then declared.
Sunderland have never forgiven Coventry or Jimmy Hill, who apparently ordered it to be done.0 -
In his outstanding book "The Italian Job" Luca Vialli highlights the difference between the integrity of the English game (in this context at least) and the culture in Italy where Clubs routinely do each other favours they then expect to be reciprocated.MuttleyCAFC said:It happens in Italy all the time. It's actually remarkable and very impressive how in England teams with nothing to play for refuse to roll over; Cardiff City and Leeds Utd on Saturday were very good examples. Derby County also did their bit. There are no easy end of season games in England and that's a great credit to all Clubs and the integrity of the competition.
I was at an extraordinary game at Covenrty (v Bristol City) in May 1977 when the two sides spent the last 10 minutes doing what happened at Huddersfield because a result elsewhere meant that both Clubs were safe if the game remained 2-2. That situation was even more dramatic though because had either Club lost they'd have been relegated. The game was controversial not just because of the way it ended, but because Coventry delayed the kick-off by 15 minutes (the argument was that Bristol City fans were late arriving) and because they announced the result of the other key game that evening over the tannoy so that all the players knew the situation. But this type of situation is very unusual and has been made even more unlikely today by the insistence that all final games are played on the same day at the same time - that wasn't always the case, of course.
