Joe Kinnear has had his fair share of unflattering headlines during his two stints at Newcastle, but a new claim could well be the worst of the lot.
According to the Sunday People, the club’s director of football recently expressed interest in signing young midfielder Shane Ferguson from Birmingham, only to discover that he was already on loan from St James’ Park.
The Kinnear camp is said to be rubbishing the story, but it’s not the first time the former Wimbledon boss’ attention to detail has been called into question.
The latest startling claim comes a few months after a bizarre radio interview in which the 66-year-old appeared to mispronounce the names of a number of the club’s players – including Yohan ‘Kebab’ and Hatem ‘Ben Afri’.
And before departing Newcastle the first time round, Kinnear also enraged midfielder Charles N’Zogbia by describing him as Charles ‘Insomnia’.
The naming blunders and run-ins with the media earned him the nickname ‘Joke in Ere’ among some supporters, while Magpies legend Alan Shearer recently complained that Kinnear’s return had made the club a “laughing stock”.
