He has zero experience as a chariman of a football club. That's my biggest problem when we have Richard Murray sitting there who can do the job ten times better.

Exactly, aside from a few single dimension committees he has no leadership (or business) experience

what has he done to deserve this job ? .. this smacks of tokenism and a sop to the race relations industry

Although ultimately Roland will have the final word, it would be good to have a charlton man like Elliot on the board, giving his opinion and hopefully backing Powell.

don't think it says PE will be Chairman but on the Board

Correct Large. RMs position is permanent too, although the exact role is still to be defined. I don't know about this Elliott thing. Tend to agree with the more sceptical voices above, but keeping an open mind

What job though? The story is just that he might be a board appointment but we don't know in what capacity. It's clearly not non-exec Chairman as that's gone to Richard Murray. I would also doubt that it's CEO or COO but we'll have to wait and see.

Rest assured Paul Elliott is a huge advocate of Chris Powell. He is also a good friend of Peter Varney but I don't think that's relevant on this occasion.

I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours in the company of Paul Elliott about 18 months ago and he was extremely passionate about all things Charlton and also Chris Powell. If Roland sees fit to appoint Paul Elliott to his board that would also add some security to Chris Powell I suspect

    You're an idiot.

and you are an arrogant little no-nothing pipsqueak .. read the Sunday Times of 29/12 where the Elliott/Rufus affair is splashed all across a national paper .. if Elliott were not 'black' and had used the language he did against Rufus, he would not work again in the football industry for a long time, he would be 'cast out' as was, for example, Ron Atkinson for using the same language.
Elliott has resigned (did he jump or was he pushed) from various Anti-Racist organisations as a result of this affair. If Elliott is appointed to a senior role within CAFC or any other football organisation, to my mind that club or organisation would fall into disrepute.

So would you rather have Roland appoint one of his people to the board than a Charlton man ?
Who do you think deserves the job ?

It's not a job, he's not going to be CEO or Chief Exec or even Chairman. Its just a seat on the Board. And as everyone knows every decent Board needs its token racist.

    But he's our racist ...

  • What the club needs is a cohesive board. The comments on this thread show that PE would be a divisive presence and therefore would not be a good appointment.

I'm not sure why RD would need a sop for the race relations industry and if he did surely he wouldn't employ someone who has publicly used racist language. Don't make no sense !

Paul Elliott has been well respected in football for years and years, not just related to race issues. As if businessmen like RM and RD would consider appointing him to the board for "tokenism"...

Who do you think deserves the job ?

Is Elliott the only 'Charlton man' who could fulfil a directorial/ambassadorial role ? .. What about (for example) Keith Peacock who has a much longer and consistent relationship with Charlton Athletic than Elliott who left CAFC as a player some thirty years ago. I have no idea what Elliott's relationship with the club has been since his playing days. Perhaps he has done a lot of good for the club recently. I do not know. I do know that the falling out with and subsequent events involving Rufus have put him in rather a bad light. I do not want Elliott's unfortunate business dealings to reflect badly on CAFC.
Having said that, I really don't have much else of an opinion as to who should be on the board or running the club, except for football matters, so long as we remain afloat, reasonably financially stable and enjoy a measure of success at what the club is essentially about, and that is playing football.
  • It seems too farfetched to me that they would employ him. I imagine they would bring a Belgium in or someone they know personally to chair their large investment.

Ridiculous, has lost all credibility in the "fight against racism"

But given the previous link, he could well have been recommended by RM and we don't actually know how much power he would have (if true of course)

This may be taking a very narrow minded view of it but to be honest since the Rufus thing I dont like the bloke. Doesnt feel right.

So how would his appointment be tokenism? Or a sop to the race relations industry?

  • I am a known and passionate opponent of racism, so why do I feel unhappy about this idea? I just find PE to be heavily into self promotion and interested in further inflating his ego. I hope with all my heart that I am way off beam.

PAUL ELLIOT IS NOT GOING TO BE THE CHAIRMAN !

IT IS ALLEGED HE WILL BE ON THE BOARD !

If we're going to have a discussion, at least discuss the facts.

NB Can't the title be changed please.

Paul Elliott got caught acting like a racist. I don't care if you're black, white, brown, whatever...if you call someone a n*****, you have used a word that is derogatory towards black people and if you use it in an argument and in a defamatory way....

    That my friend is racist.

Why did he resign from all his anti racist posts? Oh yeah...because he said something racist.

If I were to call someone a n***** in the ground I would most probably be banned for life, Paul Elliott calls a former charlton legend it and gets a seat in the boardroom,

    How does that work?

I have spent time, on two separate occasions, in his company at The Valley, listening to Paul Elliot. I might be wrong but like 'stilladdicted' above, methinks Paul is only interested only in Paul and anything which might contribute to his image and ultimately his wallet.
