I think your commentator might be correct. Nice to make a thread revealing your own ignorance though !

He sounds like a 16 year old struggling with his GCSE Spanish oral exam.

Do you get annoyed when the commentators say Juan Mata rather than John Mata?

  • David De Gea is pronounced David De Hea as in Spain.
  • Seamus Coleman pronounced Shaymus. What is funny is that speaking to a Polish guy at work, there pronounciation of Polish names are completely wrong, why not be consistant? Although some people will pronounce them the way there pronounced in there country, i'm lazy and will go for the easy option.

But that is how you pronounce Seamus. Surely it's not a matter of opinion - it's somebody's name!

    What's your name?
    Seamus
    How do you spell it?
    S E A M U S
    So Seemuss?
    No, Shaymus - it's MY f*cking name

Yeah. Fucking liberty - spending our license fee on commentators who can pronounce names correctly.
  • Z is pronounced th as in think in Classical Spanish, which is the pronunciation that is taught in schools but in a large part of Spain, and South America, it is pronounced as s. It's an interesting point though, we don't pronounce Paris the way the French do for example.

Shouldn't the pronunciation of a name be down to the guy himself? Probably wants the Spanish way...

Nah. He's playing in England, therefore should accept that his name is pronounced the same way a Northern ignoramus would order a beer in Benidorm

Interestingly, whilst the Spanish call Ibiza "Ibeetha", on the Canary Islands (a Spanish archipelago) they call it "Ibeetza"!

Annoys me when they try to be clever with Rosicky and say roz-iz-ki , it's pronounced Ross-is-key.

Apparently Hazard at Chelski is has a hard H as well so it's not pronounced "award" as he's from Blegium not France.

I rememeber Danny Baker once commenting on this subject at how the commentators insist on using a French , Spanish or Italian accent when saying their players names but never a German one when saying for instance "Schweinsteiger"
