Isnt that George Weah's cousin... Graeme Souness got duped by the agents and he made his PL debut then got subbed within 10 mins and never played again...

Yeah, I can't believe he made it into a premier league game.

Do you think Powell could of been duped? Could he be the "football fake" every club dreads! Is he really a bus driver?

That is the million doller question.

Its referring to the infamous Ali Dia whose agent (actually a college friend) rang Graeme Souness when he was boss at Saints.

The agent pretended to be George Weah (at the time at AC Milan and the best striker in the world) and told Souness that his cousin Ali Dia was in England and would Souness give him a trial?

Turned out that Saints had an injury crisis and really heavy rain during the week so Souness signed Dia on a short-term deal without seeing him train in a match situation and then he lost even more players, meaning he had to put Dia on the bench for the game.

Inevitably Saints then lost their starting striker through injury after about 30 minutes so Dia came on and was so bad that he himself was subbed about 20 minutes later.

After the match nobody ever saw Dia again and it slowly emerged that Souness had been done like a kipper.

One of the all-time great stories and to his credit even Souness laughs about it now.

I've always grudgingly admired him for having the front to try it let alone pull it off.

Ali Dia went on and played 8 games for Gateshead in the Conference scoring twice.

I'm sure Ali Dia did manage a shot at goal in that game. Not every striker we've had can say that!

When I told my old man on Saturday that the new GK was Lilian Thuram's cousin the first thing he said was "Ali Dia"!

    Karl Power

I met him randomly a few months later , he was pals with Ian Brown and Bez. I asked him if he'd ever try that again and he just laughed. Within a year he'd got onto the podium at the formula one , walked out to bat at a test match then knocked up on centre court whilst Wimbledon was on. Amazing he got away with it all.

My grandad told me that CAFC were duped a couple of times during WW2 when you were allowed to play quest players.

Yeah so the chant of "You live in a caravan" would actually be true. He came on against Man Utd and nearly crippled Gary Neville. Done him in the rib cage

How could you manage to be so bad you'd be taken off after 20 minutes?

People just stand around up front and get away with it for years.

He must have been ok during the trial if they gave him a contract..

Bet it was more because he lied about knowing George Weah.

Somebody like Souness wouldn't like that.

he'd never have got a pro contract ANYwhere unless some gullible manager thought that there might be a genetic link to some kind of footballing talent

He only played in a short indoor five-a-side on the Friday before the game because the training ground was waterlogged, they never assessed him properly because of the weather.

    Ok fair enough.

Although in an interview I saw with Matt Le Tissier on this he said that even in the 5-a-Side they thought Dia was very average and could not believe it when they got to the ground and found out he was a sub!

Ironically I think that is who Dia replaced!

They brought a defender on then which probably summed his performance up..

Yes, he did replace Le Tissier after about 30 mins.
