It was my pleasure to have known Bernard, a personal friend and a true gentleman. I will never forget him calling me and inviting me & Jean Tindell to his house to meet Eddie Firmani and Graham Tutt and the time he invited me to join him and Gordon Jago for dinner one evening in Beckenham. Hard to think of anyone who is more Mr Charlton than dear Bernard ! Rest in peace my friend.

I am so sad to hear of Bernard's passing, Pretty much every former player we interviewed was thanks to Bernard, his help with Charlton Live was essential in getting us where we are today, he backed us 100% and without fail he would surprise us with a former player when we desperately needed to fill a show. Our Archive is a testament to Bernard, all of these former player considered Bernard a friend, as did I, a friend who was always available to me personally in some difficult times. I will miss Bernard so much, the only saving grace is he may not have suffered too much, Rest In Peace Bernard, a real friend to CAFC and to Me.

Always sad to hear of the passing of a fellow Addick. I never had the pleasure of knowing him personally, but clearly an esteemed and loved fellow fan. RIP Bernard.

This was taken at the night he organised for Theo's 70th. Always laughing and smiling.

  • RIP Bernard - I was lucky enough to meet and drink & dine with him when the FPA visited the Algarve a few years back. Nice fella and Charlton through and through.

I didn't know Bernard myself but have read any number of articles and features on players in programmes, fanzines and elsewhere which mention him in favourable terms.

He sounds as though he was a special bloke.

    RIP

Very sad to learn of Bernard's passing. He always had a smile and a friendly greeting - and I will be eternally grateful to him for enabling my opportunity to play in a charity match at The Valley - 45 minutes of playing time alongside Mark Kinsella and Paul Mortimer, 'managed' for the day by Brian Kinsey. As has been stated, a true Gentleman.

    rip.
  • That's come as a terrible shock,an absolute gentleman that always had a smile on his face and a true friend. His part in the Centenary celebrations was immense, though his dedication went way beyond that. Used to love sharing a pint with him in the Plume, infectious company. Thoughts and prayers with his family, RIP old friend.

A couple of pics I took of Bernard at the Valley. For any youngster reading this the other guy is the one and only Eddie Firmani.
  • Had dealing with Bernard on a couple occasions, always had a smile.

    very sad news RIP Bernard
  • Helped me several times with guests for meetings when the Essex Branch was thriving. Can't claim him as a friend, but always found him a friendly and approachable guy. Another loss to the Charlton family.

So sorry to hear the sad news of the loss of Bernard I knew that he had some health problems but not as serious for us to lose him.

He was such a genuine person always happy and a true “giver” to others. He will be missed by so many of us former Charlton Players for he was a good friend to all of us.
  • Sat near him in the west stand for many years, a real gentlemen who was always inviting ex players to matches. Really sad to hear of his passing and my sincere condolences to his family
