South Yorkshire Old Bill

What a joke, I dread to think what tactics they would use if Millwall came to town. Completely over the top, must have cost a small fortune!

Ones I had a chat with were perfectly friendly, and said whole operation planned in advance with Wednesday in mind.

    Perfectly friendly and helpful.

I thought they were off to war, seriously.. soldiers wear less armour than that
  • Thought was well organized especially getting us parked and into the ground?
All went well without incident I thought?

I thought they were superbly organised. We were stopped just outside Sheffield, then escorted straight to the ground. Our minibus was parked right outside the away end after the game.
We spoke to a couple of them and they were they were very friendly.
    No Complaints whatsoever from me.

few of the police at the pub before hand were from derby said they were all told in advance that no leave was approved that weekend and they were all on overtime.

We had a laugh last week about their wall thing, but seeing the set up on the road outside of the away end i'm fairly certain it would have been going off all over the place if people had been allowed to mix after as they had before the game.

Really didn't get the thought of being held for half an hour by the side of the M1 J33, and then escorted like a military operation for five miles of nothingness only to result in being delivered and let out in the middle of hundreds of home fans. Bizarre.

On the bus escort out afterwards, i have never seen so many police at a football game before.

the police don't know how the game is gonna go , if (lol) we'd nicked a last minute winner them northern monkeys would have been frothing at the bit and baying for blood
so the precautions were in place for that
when we nick a last minute winner at the den you'll wish the old bill were there mark my words

To be fair to the OB, they have to think of the `what ifs'.
What if we'd won 1-0 with a late controversial penalty?
The United fans on here ('cept one) have been good but there are plenty that would love to kick our cockney arses.

walked through the door in the wall to get to my car and my son asked what that was all about and i had to explain about quite a few footy fans being helms
later on in the car he mentioned about the wall being there and i said if we'd have won the sheff utd fans might have wanted to fight us , his response was well they won why didn't we fight them ,
i reminded him we're not millwall and that every club has a number of helms following them but %age wise the scum are the worse and that having a fight over a game of football is a bit silly

Didn't see no police until our coach was outside the ground so no complaints from me! Good day apart from the game.

I drove so the only old bill I saw was outside the away end which seemed OK to me.

Our minibus wisely came into Sheffield from J31 so avoided it all.
  • Parked in the city then walked to the ground. As we were arriving van after van load of police were arriving from Durham lol, talk about ott!! Mentioned to one of them that I could not understand why Durham police were called in as well in such large numbers and he said everything was put in place assuming the Wendy's would go through and this was going to be his easiest bit of overtime ever.

Even the old bill are as deluded as the Wendy fans lol

A lot of them - but seemed friendly and helpful. Great escort in and out through red lights and straight to the M1. Yes it all seemed a bit OTT and obviously set-up for the anticipated local derby - bit thought they did a great job!

Walked back around to car in the SUFC main car park, had to go through the wall. It had a trailer (Wendy House like thing) that you walked through in single file to get out the other side.
  • Friendly and well organised but our police really are now moving towards a paramilitary organisation. Says a lot about our society I suppose. The coppers (sounds almost quaint ) standing alongside our coach looked like Robocop.

I don't get this whole 'it was set up for Wednesday' thing. Surely Wednesday wouldn't have needed coach escorts from the M1 into Sheffield?

Anyway, they've known for 2 weeks it wasn't going to be Wednesday. Surely there was time to rethink?

Personally I didn't have any issues and wasn't inconvenienced at all except for a short wait to get through the gate after the game. But I thought the police were supposed to be strapped for cash at the moment. If I was a South Yorkshire council taxpayer I'd want to know how much all that unnecessary overtime had cost!
  • Parked at Meadowhall station and got train in, free parking and £2.80 return. Went to Waterworks with what seemed like our entire following. The police outside were fine, no hassle, only the bar woman got annoyed saying that the pavement wasn't a beer garden and ushered everyone back inside. Walking to the ground no hassle from fans or police. Same on walk to the station. Had my shirt on display and not a word said from Utd during walk or on train packed with Utd. Bad day on the pitch, but great day otherwise.

It's like that when we play each other all the time, normally we win and they have to have a shoulder to cry on.

Had no problems with them came out of the ground and was walking down the road towards our hotel and asked to coppers about a cab one said give me a couple of minutes and next thing I new one pulled up for us, seemed a lot better than the met no attitude problem and you could talk to them.

Definitely not the worst coppers I've ever met. Bloody loads of them though.
  • Never seen so many police at a Charlton game. As others have said though, if we'd won and were all allowed to mingle after it would've gone off and people on here would be moaning. Although the need for a helicopter was definitely OTT!!

I thought they were fine it seemed well organised a little frustrating sat on the HS when we first arrived and the traffic guy said they do this for a lot of games these days.

The drive of shame back past them all waving flags and giving it the "churchy" was hard to take but we just fell back on the old "speak English" and "at least we can leave" cliche/banter.

Football is fickle and I fully expect to see the same abusers crying at Wembley, maybe with the odd bespectacled 12 year old amidst their ranks who knows, who knows.

All in all I still enjoyed my day, met AKFA, Bedsaddick and Kinveachyaddick and SYP were no problems at all, despite the obvious flaunting of the no drinking in a minibus they couldn't of missed!

A bit weird to have the same level of Security for us as a local derby. Imagine if it had been the other way round, and we were home either Palace or The Blades, then it would be daft to use the same tactics for both opponents.
I don't know whether to be pleased or insulted that I wasn't body searched (for flares etc) before going into the ground, I'm obviously getting old :-)
