Hi guys. I came on here in September around the time you were playing Burnley at ours. Some decent discussions about your team if I remember rightly. I recall a difference of opinions from your fans on a midfielder I felt had a good game - Stephens?? Your right back also had a good game at ours too - long hair I think?
I've not been to The Valley before, but it's a ground I have always wanted to visit. Me and a mate are travelling over from Swindon next Saturday on the train, and are looking for some advice on away friendly pubs to visit, and perhaps any to avoid.
Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Turn left out of station, The Antigallican is the away pub on the corner , about 50 yards.0

Great. We should have a reasonable following I'd imagine. We'd sold 717 by Thursday lunchtime out of our 1,500 allocation (more if needed). If we sell the 1,500 I think that'll be pretty decent.0

A few of your lads were in the British Oak a few years back (a decent bunch they were to)...only convienient if your driving, you can park near there and walk down to the ground in 30 mins, it's a pretty decent pub to. As others have said The Antigallican is the most convienient and will be full of Burnley and as your coming by train that would be your best bet.0

Might be sampling a few more than 3 pints, but we're also in need of the 3 points, guinessaddick.
Genuinely no disrespect intended, but most Burnley fans will see this game as a must win, as we have a couple of games coming up late March/early April that we have a real fight to get anything from. Your pitch could be a leveller though, and of course anything can happen in football. Danny Ings is injured with ankle ligament damage, and could be out for a few weeks, so we're hoping that Ashley Barnes steps up.0 -
I remember a large group of Burnley lads paying a visit to the Horse and Groom, FA Cup 3rd Round day '94. Think they were all in the decorating game cos they did their best to rearrange the interior.

I was very impressed with your team when we played at Turf Moor .. you have managed to keep virtually the same side all season long .. I hope that Ings gets well soon but misses the game against us, he and Vokes are a lethal force .. I'd love to see you back in the prem, a real old fashioned English town and club ... BUT .. I also hope we put 6 past Heaton @ the valley .. The midfielder you liked, Stephens, he's gone to Brighton and the right back Wilson is covering for one of our stars Chris Solly, a long term injury .. Wilson is even more effective (to my mind) on the right side of midfield0

Addickupnorth, most clubs have their share of idiots. We used to have a higher percentage than most, but thankfully those days seem to be disappearing as we don't see it too much these days. I might have a look in a couple of the other pubs mentioned as it's good to chat with like minded opposing fans about the game and season.
Lincsaddick, yeah, I do remember Wilson being good going forward, and he caused our midfield a few problems down that side. I don't think you have to worry about Ings as it sounds a medium term injury.0 -

Indeed Claretforever, all clubs do and the incident I referred to was years ago when football was still dealing with a much larger problem. It was in no way meant as a slur on Burnley per se.
To balance it out, at your place this season I met a Burnley fan who was the epitome of a gentleman and I only asked for directions.

Cheers mate. I obviously want the 3 points but genuinely hope you stay up. Although I wasn't old enough to see it (I'm mid-30's) I have always liked Charlton from being a kid, reading about the old Valley terraces and seeing pictures. Also the fact that you beat us in the 1947 cup final strangely drew me towards finding out more about your team.
If it's Millwall that happen to go down, despite me liking Holloway, then all the better! ;-)6 -
If the weather is nice, you fancy a 10 minute walk away from the hordes & want to sit/stand outside a pub overlooking the Thames, then The The Anchor & Hope is for you. It's a quiet place for a good chat.
The food & drink are excellent.
Turn left out of the station and just carry on walking straight ahead for 10 mins and you'll come to it.
You obviously cross a couple of roads and are walking away from the ground (which is close to the station).

ME7, ha. I remember when I first began watching Burnley as a kid in the late 80's. We were going to the grounds in the 4th division and, as you can imagine, we often had as many away fans as they had home supporters. Saw a number of occurrences of idiot Burnley fans taking on much larger groups (Perhaps where the name came from?). I thought it was cool at the time(I didn't know any better), until I was almost caught up in it at home to Stoke when I was about 13-14. Very scary and not something you want to be anywhere near. I suppose idiotic best describes those people - an absolute scourge on the game.
I think those days are long gone now. About 14 years ago when we were promoted we had a couple of years of young lads calling themselves Suicide Youth Squad (SYS), but again, that was stopped pretty quickly after the Forest fan was killed in Burnley - the police seemed to really get a grip of it.0 -

Outside the stadium searches aren't a big issue. They pat down your sides and wouldn't find anything if someone really wanted to take something in. What that might be I have no idea?
Inside the stadium then our fans, like most, have a problem with being told to sit and be good.
Regarding the boycott, I noticed you had only 12,900 (?) on your last game. I always thought you got 15-17,000 at this level? Is this just a factor due to poor football?
EDIT: I know you suffered with poor crowds in the 80's, as the majority of football did. I mean since your first promotion to the Premier League it's always been high teens.0 -
Variety of factors influence the crowd figure not least the fact it was an evening fixture. It's alleged we sometimes make up our attendances (unused comps are said to be included) and have allegedly done so for some time.
Worth noting we once averaged in excess of 40000 per game over a season, and have one of the biggest record attendances in English football (actual attendance likely to be higher than the recorded one).0 -
I know what you mean SheffieldRed. Burnley used to include non attending ST holders at one point, but I believe it is now just those through the turnstiles. We played Bolton away a few weeks ago and there was 12,000 on, tops. Crowd announced 16,500 ish. They've been boycotting but everyone was surprised at the crowd announced until their fans explained.
Burnley had a number of 52-53,000 sell outs in the late 50's and through the 60's, mainly in FA Cup games, but they guessed a lot in those days so stayed under official capacities.0 -

Pointer, McIlroy, Adamson, Harris, Lochead, Blackmore, Connelly .. you had some terrific players in the era before the abolition of the maximum wage made it impossible to keep players happy .. before your time though .. you missed seeing some very good players0

I know Lincsaddick. I've heard the stories many, many times from my grandad who I first started going on with in 1987 - the Orient game where we nearly went out of the league. I've done my apprenticeship, so to speak! :-). Wish I'd seen some of the players you mention though :-(.
We'd sold just short of 1,300 tickets as of lunchtime yesterday, so should be 1,800 ish, give or take, I'd imagine.1 -

Wouldn't worry too much about that mate. Most away fans stand all game (probably due to the seats being covered in pigeon shit). We average 13,000 at home and it's a 4 hour trip down (ish). 1,800 would be good numbers. We're not pretending to be bigger than what we are, a la Leeds (the biggest club in the whole universe). We're a small town club that happens to get, for our town size, a decent following. Burnley and Scunthorpe, for example, are similar in size and they get <5,000.stonewallpenalty said:

Can't (or won't) get to London this weekend so I might go to the Scunny game and boost their attendance .. a 6 pointer against the mighty (wait for it) ..... Burton Albion ((:>) .. there is of course much more of a football tradition in Burnley .. (you even won the 1st division title in 1960) than in mild mannered Lincolnshire .. many Scunthorpe football fans support Leeds or even Forest and of course the Manchester clubs, easy train journeys to them all .. it amazes me that Scunthorpe do as well as they do on gates of 3000-5000 .. good management on & off the field is of course the key .. I have a soft spot for the Irons (the West Ham version also, 2 more Claret and Blue outfits)Claretforever said:

the antigallican used to be good for away fans but more recently (this season) it has become home fans only after the game. just a heads up. rose of denmark sometimes allows away fans after but in general i think a short trip down to Greenwich is ya best bet for a drink after the game.0
