Complacency

We've got off to a great start under Riga. But I am reminded of the temporary lift that Pardew bought to the club in his first few games. We moved up the table and survival was well within our reach. We then had a televised away game which we approached very negatively and seemed content in playing out a drab 0 0 draw. We never managed to regain the initial spark and ended up getting relegated. We must not get complacent. We need to stay positive and keep pushing on for more wins until we are mathematically safe.

Powell won his first four games as well and look what happened then
  • I don't think there's much room for complacency. The next games look tough. We will do well not to be back in the bottom three after three nasty away games within one week at Forest, Derby & Leeds.
  • As I said on another thread after the match last night... Its all well and good winning / drawing games as a Manager but sooner or later we will lose under Riga (simply because I dont think we're good enough to go the rest of the season undefeated) but we'll truly see his Managerial ability when we have to bounce back from that defeat

I always boringly bang on about small margins in football, but it just shows that in three games we've hit the target just once with a badly defended corner, and its a 'great start'. Had that badly defended corner been at the wrong end, then it would have been a 'terrible start'.

The most important element in football is lady luck.

I don't think there is any chance of complacency kicking in now we are in the business end of the season. Hopefully the win last night will give us a bit of momentum as the way to get out of this is a run of 3-4 positive results, like say Bolton and T'Wednesday had recently. When there is a positive wave, you need to ride it.

We have 13 games left. Win 5 of them and we'll be on 47 points which I think will be enough to stay up.

For Yeovil and Millwall to get that they will need to win 5 of their remaining 10 games. Barnsley would need to win 6 out of 11.

And seeing as all of us have only won 6 or 7 games this season the points total needed might be even lower.

Sorry AFKA just for my sanity but how do you mean when you say we've hit the target just once as the BBC website says we've had 13 shots on target in the last three matches? - Unless by saying we've hit the target once you mean we've only scored once...

The fact we are very difficult to break down will hopefully put us in good stead for the next 3 games. Would be happy with 3 0-0 draws!
  • Will be delighted with a 0-0 draw against Burnley

Nobody is complacent. It is a good start - three clean sheets, five points and out of the relegation zone.

Too early to make predictions re Riga generally, but I am impressed that he has come into a team at a very difficult time, made an initially positive impact and coped with trying to follow a very popular and liked manager and the associated hostility and suspicion.

We wondered if we could go the rest of the season with 0-0 draws. and survive. Would have been boring but amazing! was almost dissapointed when we scored last night that it hadn't worked out ;-)

  • After saturday our home games are all very winnable. I think that will decide our fate. Saturday is also winnable.

It has the feel of when Pardew took over and when we beat Curbs's West Ham.

At least we have given ourselves a chance.

Fair point. You could argue that if Harriott's chance had gone a foot to the left at Bramall Lane then Sheffield United would've been demoralised and we'd be going to Wembley. Fine margins.

We won't get complacent this time because deep down we know that we are not great. However:

    1. We have put ourselves in a position where we are in control of what happens at least for now, notwithstanding the fact that we have a run of four games coming up where we may well end up with no points at all.

    2. The teams below and immediately above us are not very good either.

    3. We have the "new manager" bounce. Let's see if it lasts.

    4. Although there are glaring weaknesses we at least have a squad assembled now that will cope in terms of numbers if not necessarily quality.

A long way to go. There will be ups and downs. But a few weeks ago we were rock bottom and liked royally stuffed. Hopefull? Yes. Complacent? No chance.

Not sure it's complacency, just nice to have a positive couple if results meaning happier people on here
  • Mentally, I think we have been brilliant this week. We are out of the relegation zone far sooner than I thought possible. I just don't want us to take our foot off the pedal thinking that it's job done. That would be a terrible mistake, but a mistake easily and often made in such a situation. I hope, Riga, the coaching staff and Jacko recognise the danger and don't allow it to happen.

Saturday is going to be very hard, so at the same time i don't want us to get too deflated if we end up losing saturday and a few teams around us pick up points.

True, but teams do tend to pick up more points in the run in if they have more to play for.

Wow if ever a post recalled a pained moment, this one hits the spot! ( unlike Harriott unfortunately)
    Fine margins, fine margins....

As we have both Yeovil & Barnsley still to play, we mustn't loose to either of these two.

We’ve got Jose as the gaffer
We’ve got bean bags in the bar
We’ve got lots of willing players and they come from lands afar
We’ve got a load of great supporters and a lot of proppa fans
    What ain’t we got?
    We ain’t got Yann.
  • We need Yeovils mini revival to come off the rails. I still think it will be Barnsley, Yeovil and one of Charlton or Millwall.

I think the key as well could be not to become disheartened if we drop back into the bottom three. For instance lose Saturday and millwall get something from Leeds. We have to stay positive knowing three games in hand still.

"You make your own luck" - a lot of truth in this.

We "got lucky" because we were in their penalty area, instead of unlucky because we were dropping deeper and deeper and making negative substitutions.

Three difficult games and a real test for Riga and the aquad If the players can maintain their spirit through these games, whatever the results we may well have weathered the storm but 9 games in April will test everyone, including us fans. I predict a few more "bum squeakers" before we are safe!

Most important! Absolutely no way! A bit of luck may come along but most important?! Never
