Relegation battles

When was the last time we survived a relegation battle? Obviously, we didn't the last time we were in a Championship one, or a Premier League one. In the years with Curbs in the Prem I don't remember any relgation fights and for years before we were one of the better Championship teams... so when was it?

Selhurst Park years I suppose. Can`t remember any since either. I can remember one from before we left The Valley when we had to play Bolton at home last game and it was us or them to go down. They scored just after half time and we all feared that was it and we were doomed but the team found some fight and eventually won 4.1 to keep us up and send Bolton down to Div 3!
  • Does last year count? 2-0 down at HT to Bolton to drop in bottom 3 with about 10 games left certainly felt like it.

I have the video of that game. Killer outpacing Mike Doyle for the penalty he subsequently converted.

1987 v Leeds at St Andrews
1988 v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

I believe the year later we beat Man U at Selhurst and stayed up with a game to go.

IIRC you got relegated in 89' along with Millwall and us, both you and Millwall were both relegated with a few games to go, I remember coming to SP with you already doomed and winning 2-1 I think, but a week later we lost at home to Forest 0-3 and Luton won away at derby sending us down on goal diff by one goal I think.

We went up in 1986 and got relegated in our fourth season: 1990. Actually 1989 was our best finish in those four years.

So, like I suspected, we are not exactly Coventry City when it comes to relegation fights!!!

We had a few relegation scraps in the 60's in this division (Div2 obviously known)

We used to be experts in the late 60's early 70' and then when Lennie was in charge he was not called houdini for nothing

Watch the video as the second goal (I think) goes in. there's a bloke cycling past the covered end and the roar from the crowd almost makes him fall off.

Always remember leaving selhurst after losing that Sheffield Wednesday game in 89-90 and Wednesday fans gloating about us going down ( they thought they were safe).
Couldn't have been happier when they were relegated a week later :)

It's actually the third goal by Gritt (I think). Many a laugh at that and the camera work when suddenly he is filming the sky!

Well we can now add 2013/14 to our list of successful relegation battles - never in doubt :-)

I think that now we have survived, we owe it to the integrity of the league to give our best against Blackpool. If we were not safe, we would expect no less so whilst I would like Millwall to go, we have to forget other results and try to beat them on Saturday.
