Just after someone was 'escorted' out of the bar area, I saw an elderly looking chap with a hat and glasses remonstrating with stewards/old bill. No idea what any of it was all about, he didn't seem the type to be pissed or on drugs!

I remember acting like a complete bell end at away games in my teens. The Brighton away game was always a hightlight of the calendar. Grew out of it of course but if it is becoming a bigger problem its not just us. I would suggest the complete on pitch no show caused more offence but hope the normal fans will not be discouraged from attending in future.

  • It's an away game - these things happen. Away fans are expected to stand too, I genuinely feel a bit weird sitting down at away games. I'm more concerned about what happened on the pitch tbh, dreadful performance

I think this post sums up the problems nicely.

I don't expect these things to happen at away games and I don't expect to stand either.

Point I'm trying to make is every team in the country will see things like this happen (apart from maybe Fulham). It's a day out, fuelled by alcohol and the passion of supporting a football team. Things will spill over, especially with police antagonising the same fans that have been drinking all day

The problems were caused by pissed up Charlton fans antagonising other Charlton fans!

I know, that job of pulling lads for singing that vile "we can see you holding hands". One very hard working female officer told me to f off when I asked why they had 2 vans and a car to deal with 4 people in a pub. And those darlings also stood by as some local youth were trying to arrange a fight. Top job!!! The bloke from the met I spoke to basically said he would rather not comment on the policing down there... But obviously its all the fans fault

If the bloke from the Met didn't want to comment then I dare say he's a bit disappointed himself, and can see that things weren't being dealt with correctly. I suspect Charlton fans were getting the typical 'London Club' treatment.

It's not getting worse, it's just easier to highlight and talk about these incidents because of the Internet.

You know the internet has been around for over 20 years now... right?
Popular football forums and social media haven't been around for half of that.

Pissed up dickheads have always gone to watch football, you are just more likely to hear about any antics now cos of twitter etc

Don't dwell on this rubbish, it happens to all groups of fans. Millwall are just the Barcelona of fighting each other.

Exactly. Happens at every club up & down the country. We just made sure ours was on national television.

To be honest I think people should have more respect for the police. It is very simple really, if you don't cause trouble by behaving yourself, you won't have anything to do with them. Like most young people I drink at games, but even if I drink too much I don't turn into some foul-mouthed touchy animal and there's no reason why anyone else should either.

As I see it we have those that are very vocal and stand and those that are quiet and sit! The standing fans generally gravitate to the rear of the stand which usually works OK. At Derby we had a few that spent more time goading the home fans in our stand than watching the match (maybe they were right) and it created a bit of atmosphere, pity we weren't in the game to make the banter more fun than depressing defensive jibes. Hillsborough is going to be lively I have no doubt!

  • I do think our fans need to make their minds up though. Everyone's willing to slag off our support and say we need to do more to change our atmosphere, but 9/10 of our fans are willing to just sit there in silence, and moan if people do stand. And let's be honest, an atmosphere will not be created with a packed away end sitting down. This is a separate issue to the fighting our own fans, but it is an issue in this thread

Think you're being unfair & tarring 9/10 of our fans with the same brush , OBH.

I'm happy to stand whilst I'm shouting, clapping, singing with the best of 'em ( as those I've rendered deaf over the years will tell you!) but unless EVERYONE is standing & I have little choice in the matter, I'll happily sit whilst making my noise.

It's a fallacy that you have to stand to make yourself heard.

Just as it's also untrue that 9/10 of our fans sit in silence.

A good example of this was THAT home game v Cardiff when The Valley was rocking . No-one anywhere near me stood during that fantastic comeback but there was plenty of noise emanating from the East Stand on that occasion.

One of our lads who looked about 20, was getting ejected by about 6 coppers/stewards at HT . I don't know why.

Then some chap who looked to be in his 70's, with a hat, glasses and waving a walking stick, went berserk at the police/stewards and the only reason he wasn't ejected, was probably because of my above description (imo).

Then a group of about 30 of our fans, most probably aged 18-21 started to push & shove the old bill/stewards, whilst jumping up and down and throwing their pints over the OB.

Tbh, I can't say I recognised any of our involved fans & considering I've been going home & away for 35 years, I was a little surprised.

Mind you it was much the same at Palace A last season.

TBF the police let them get away with it. If they'd done similar elsewhere, it would have gone off big time.

The general atmosphere around me in the AmEx was the most awful I've experienced for a long time, even poisonous. From the first minute, fans of all ages screaming like animals, some of the thickest, most dimwitted bile. This was aimed constantly at our own players for 90mins.

*Hamer traps the ball with loads of time*

"KIIICK IIIIT! WHAAAAAYADOOING YA W###ER?!!! F###ING JUST KICK IIIIIT! AAAAARGHHHH!"

    ...and so on.

By the end, the sane amongst us just had to laugh, it was so odd.

Genuine question as an East-stander.. Is this behaviour more common in the North or West stands these days?

It's the reason these games are moved to midweek. Drinking all day does not agree with everyone. Although by the look of them drinking for five minutes could be tricky

There did seem to be a lot of aggression towards the team from the get-go, more so than usual.

Think it sometimes comes down to which players are involved. If Hamer makes a mistake, as he did, then a lot of people go ballistic at him. He's an easy target stood right in front of the away fans.

I didn't see or hear the same abuse for Chris Solly however when he gifted them their third goal.

It comes back to scapegoats, players aren't judged equally. If Hamer makes a mistake he gets hammered if Solly makes a mistake nothing. The same applies to our two previous Managers.

Imo we need more fannies in the away end.
  • The kid sat next to me who was wasted, appeared proud of the fact he'd been sick at half time, and basically spent the entire match barking (literally barking) "CAAARRRRMMM OOONNNN CHARLLLLDDDOOONN" followed by mutters of "for f**ks sake" and "we can't get beaten by poofs" was making everyone laugh by the end.

Twenty minutes in he was annoying, by the end of the match his inability to sing any words to any of the songs, to shout RED ARMY out of sync with everyone else and the fact he moaned endlessly like a little girl to his mate that he'd bought them "shit tickets, we should be over there where the trouble is" made the rest of us around him have a good laugh at him that he seemed oblivious to.

He was a classic mouthy drunk wannabe hooligan teen who if trouble actually came near him would probably run away/faint/piss his jeans. Probably about 17/18.

However I suspect had he been sat in amongst equally pissed people then he may not have bitten his tongue quite so much (!)

Sad. If my ticket had been in amongst 20 or 30 like him it wouldn't have been quite so amusing.

    Very true.

You can see it in the players marks sections as well.

Say Morrison and Green both play equally averagely (i.e. 5), both making quite a few mistakes (yes this has happened on a few occasions):

Morrison will always get marked a MINIMUM of 6 while Green would get 3's and 4's.

Wiggins and Pritchard a similar example.

Saw that as well but from where we were it looked a bit like they were just picking a few Brighton fans who didn't really want to know. One of them actually shouted "come on then, you're supposed to be at home" as though that would make them want to fight. Wonder if any of this lot would be wandering around Bermondsey shouting that before the Millwall away game.

Funnily enough this exactly how I imagine a poster on here who is about to move from the North Upper to the East Stand next season and keeps banging on about how good the atmosphere is going to be - Can hardly wait!!!

I always attend home games, but haven't travelled away for many years. If I was thinking about going to some away games, reading all of this would make me think again.
