Saw Goodfellas for the first time very recently, feel a bit ashamed for not having seen it before now. Brilliant film, might have sneaked into that list. How good was Pesci's performance in that?!

    Requiem for a dream

Finally! I was waiting for someone to bring that one up and slightly surprised it took three pages. I didn't include it in my list only because it was too dark and depressing. I've never watched it again as I simply can't. But of all the films I've seen, this one has the biggest impact on me.

I can see Goodfellas making No.1 on the final list. I personally much prefer Casino though.
I reckon it's Sharon Stone's role which (just) pushes Casino ahead of Goodfellas.

It's interesting to see how many people have got mafia/gangster films on their list. Just trying to think why that is. Is there something about that genre that particularly fascinates? Is it that the best directors and actors are drawn to that type of film? Or is it coincidence that there just happen to have been some cracking movies of that ilk? Or is perhaps the mark of a good movie a high swear count? ;-)

Modern day gangster films have largely been about the mafia. Most of the films mentioned have been by Coppola and Scorsese, two Italian-Americans who grew up in New York. I know Scorsese spent a lot of time in Little Italy and was fascinated by the underworld. They both went on to make very, very good films.

There is also some glamourisation which we as an audience are drawn to. This can be compared to Liotta's character in Goodfellas, we know it's wrong but are drawn in by the gambling, violence, etc, much like he was. In a world without repercussions it would be an ideal life for many. There aren't many cooler things than being a wise guy.
