                    I was asked this question.
"Without googling it , which Charlton player missed a penalty at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden? "
Must admit I didn't get it myself !!

Somebody should get it but as I'm going to be without internet access shortly until late afternoon I'll leave it until then. He was aged 21 and only had one cap prior to the tournament if that helps.AddicksAddict said:

I've just googled it and have to admit I've never heard of him0

John Hewie seems to have not only played in the 1958 finals but also missed a penalty , but this was not the name I was given.
I was told it was Trevor Edwards for Wales who got through to the semis beating the great Hungary.
Can anyone tell me if he , like Hewie , did miss a penalty.

I think it unlikely Edwards took a penalty for Wales as he was a young fullback and only played twice for Wales (full international) in his career unlike Hewie who took them for Charlton and was a very experienced pro at the time.0

Excellent info RC and thanks for the video, rina.
I will pass that on.0 -
No probs. OK that's two players from our club who have taken part in the finals, there are three more name them and the year of the competition and no Googling. All you youngsters should get this, by that I mean aged 21 and over :-)0

Kins & Deano. Also had Matty Holland however he wasn't with us at the time.
I'll leave the other for someone else.0 -

Very good, Holland as you say does not count what about the year?guinnessaddick said:Kins & Deano. Also had Matty Holland however he wasn't with us at the time.

Well done, I have a sneaking suspicion you might be from the Emerald Isle :0)0

Only a couple of hours to go and still looking for the fifth player to have taken part in the World Cup finals whilst on our books and the year. So far we have Hewie and Edwards 1958 and Kiely and Kinsella 2002.0
 -
Claus Jensen, I think he played against England 2002.0

Well done GA spot on, Claus came on as a sub in 58th min as England beat Denmark 3-0.
If anyone is interested, the link below shows 793 players of 64 English League clubs that have played in the World Cup finals from 1950 to 2010. Not surprisingly, Manure 74, Arsenal 61, Liverpool 58, Chelsea 54 head the table whilst we lie in a creditable joint 34th.

Like Matty and Rom, there were quite a few ex-Charlton or Charlton-to-be at the 2002 finals. Anyone interested can work out the ones who were at English clubs from the myfootballfacts.com link above.0
