Article says he's "leaving", and various posters higher up the thread say he's been made redundant. I think they'd put "retiring" on the article if that was the case.

Paul Ellis has been made redundant. Bradshaw going on July 31st, apparently.

And poor Paul Ellis. I don't think I would be far away in saying this was his life. Very sad

He's been absolutely shat on over the last few years, has this summer been offered less hours and less money, and after 41 years attached to the club someone gets his name wrong on his leaving papers.

Good luck Paddy and thanks for everything. I'm sure something else will pop up soon.

This is what is so sad and wrong.

People get made redundent, it's sad but sometimes it is required.

But treating people like this, getting their name wrong, cutting hours, etc is just WRONG. And if he as been made redundent then just say so.

Also very sad about Paul Ellis. Not an ex-player but someone just about everyone involved with the Club would know or at least recognise. Tyed in the wool Addick. Really, how much did the Club save letting him go?

Good luck Paul, maybe you can come and help us with the museum.

Nice comments folks, he will really appreciate them. His health is fine and he hasn't retired, he was offered a redundancy package and decided to take it. I'm quite glad in a way as he has always stressed about the pitch but the last couple of years have been really hard on him. He has a couple of irons on the fire, but I really hope the club I love get him involved with some matchday hospitality stuff as i really want him to still be involved in some small way.

I had the good fortune to work with Paddy for nearly ten years - fantastic at his job and a very funny friendly guy.
He has had a virtually impossible job in the last couple of years - after such a long association with the club to leave and be treated in this manner is shocking.

On the appreciation thread, a lot of people have said 'enjoy your retirement'. I don't think he is retiring, just being made redundant.

Hopefully he'll get another job elsewhere, but he may decide to retire.

Very sad news. As others have said, trying to get that pitch in top condition has been a thankless task for the last few years.

Does make me laugh though that some people would be having a go at Poyet if he leaves for not showing Charlton any loyalty. Would this be the same loyalty the club have shown to so many long standing employees (and real Charlton people) over the last couple of years?

A lot of people take redundancy at pensionable age. A useful way of getting a tax free payout. If Paddy did he deserves every penny. Uninformed speculation here fails to recognise that the new management is doing good work on the commercial side and this can only be good if our club is to survive.

the new pitch being installed with some plastic grass has basically would have made his workload lighter, some turnip with a tie has come in and said "you can get rid of him to save money". Completely forgetting his knowledge and his affinity with the club.

When i hear about consultants i just think of this scene from office space

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6qVP5KnOGU

btw if its true it was made out to "Chris Powell" that's an utter disgrace and whoever made that mistake should receive a severe bollocking.

    I'm sure it's a coincidence :-/

The fella has been fantastic and has taken unnecessary stick 're the pitch over the last year, but he told back in the board back in the late 90's that the drainage was knackered then. Considering all the money from our time in the premier league, the pitch in my opinion was neglected and Colin should have been given the money to rectify it.

Shame another part of Charlton history has departed. All the best.

I thought you made roles (rather than people) redundant, if so, does this mean we won't have a groundsman or just one for both training ground and the Valley ? Will the new pitch require less maintenance ?

Pitch maintenance could be contracted out to the company installing the new surface.
