Will a new superstar emerge from this World Cup ?

Going into the 2010 World Cup, the two big things in World football were Messi and Ronaldo.

Four years on, the picture hasn't really changed.

The last couple of World Cup's have failed to produce either a stand out individual performer, or a new rising star.

Could there be one this World Cup? Who do you fancy to shine and elevate themselves ?

I think Rooney will have a good tournament.
  • James Rodriguez of Colombia would be my top pick to make a bigger name for himself, not that he is exactly unknown now.
  • Hopefully it'll be Raheem Sterling.

Luis Suarez could cement his status as a global superstar if he's fit in time.

Ángel di María (Argentina)....I know hes a star anyway but I reckon he could be in line for a fantastic WC and move up to superstardom.

Julian Draxler could really put his mark on the tournament imo.

Another one who could shine for France is Antoine Griezmann.

I know both players are pretty well known but i wouldnt say they are "Superstars" yet.

Was going to say him. Been on fire for Torino.

I think we'll see a keeper as the hero of the World cup.

I still believe England will so well and I can see Gary Cahill making a big name for himself on the international stage.

    Great minds Henry, great minds...

Immobile was still available at 80/1 last night and well worth a couple of quid each way IMO.

Gary Cahill vs Lionel Messi would be a mismatch of epic proportions!

2010 was Alexis Sanchez's tournament. Later signed by Barca.

Verratti is another one to look out for. I can see him doing the damage to us when we focus on stopping Pirlo.
  • Rodriguez

    Immobile and De Sciglio

    Dede Ayew

None of them unknowns to football fanatics but all likely to be much bigger profile post WC

Someone other than Messi or Ronaldo will obviously have a great tournament.
Depends on the winner aswell. If Brazil win it, one of their players will be their major player, perhaps Neymar can prove he is one of the very best?
If the Germans do well, maybe one of their younger players will shine, like Ozil and Khedira did at the last Cup and earnt big moves.

Valbuena is always underrated. With Ribery out he'll be France's main winger.

Though he was Euro 2012's stand out player, Alan Dzagoev should make a big impact now he's 23. Surprised no-one tried to sign him after that tournament.

The way football and social media combine nowadays, there are barely any unknown talents going into a World Cup. Most of my picks have all already been mentioned: James Rodriguez of Colombia, Valbuena & Griezmann of France, Immobile of Italy.

The other two players I'd add that might take a few by surprise are Josip Drmic of Switzerland and Aleksandr Kokorin of Russia.

I would also add Japan defender Nagatomo

Nagatomo is a good attacking left back and was named in Arsene Wenger’s team of the tournament at the last World Cup

Barkley, Lallana and Sterling could be the ones. I'm also hoping Reza so we can get some decent cash for him. Immobile is my tip though. Quality finisher and I won't be at all surprised if he gets the Golden Boot.
