Cost of a book of stamps.

now we all know that a book of 6 first stamps is £3.60 (6 x 60p). My local Londis shop has for months been charging £3.80 and today I went in & was charged £3.92 !! I complain every time but whoever is behind the till just shrugs their shoulders & says that's the price that comes up when the book is barcode scanned (which is true).
Anyone know whether this is legal or am I (and many others ) being conned. Can they charge more than the standard price (because they are not a post office) or is a book of stamps the same price everywhere (which I have always assumed) ??
Weird thing is that the book is always scanned first & not just priced into the till - that being the case how can the bar code not show it to be £3.60 ???

Imagine my surprise when I last bought a book of stamps and went to use the first one, I licked it before I realised it was the self adhesive type, YUK!!!!! The whole family are regularly in creases when I retell that one...0

In 2008, a Penny Black in poor condition can cost as little as £15. A reasonable looking Penny Black will cost you £25. A better quality specimen might cost £60 to £100. A stamp with unusual attributes can cost up to £250. Mint examples are considerably more valuable – expect to" pay anything from £1800 upwards.
By contrast, a used Penny Red can cost as little as £1.50."
Well, you did ask.
PS: I've got a Penny Red.

Poor old, Golfie.
No Charlton relegation issues to be gloomy about, so he's had to moan about the price of stamps.

The shop over the road from the supermarket I work in apparently charges more for stamps than they should be too. According to CAB site it's not allowed: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/scotland/consumer_s/consumer_post_e/consumer_complaining_about_post_e/charged_more_than_the_face_value_for_stamps.htm1

The "post office" makes about 7% on what you pay to post something at the counter.
This is about the same if a corner shop buys stamps "wholesale" - which you can do in, say, Makro.
Corner shops do not need to overcharge in the way you describe.0 -

that counts for why the shop has put their price up from £3.80 to £3.92.eldavide said:Stamps did go up recently should be £3.72 62p each yes you are getting ripped off buy them elsewhere

This thread is 1st class. I do think we should stamp the abuse out of poor Golfie otherwise we could have a sticky situation here.0

Hey Golfie - you run a business don't you - IFA right?
Why aren't you using Royal Mail's "business mail" set up and paying the reduced prices of 49p first class or 35p second class?0 -

I do a lot of posting, so when the price went up from 46p to 60p, I bought about £6,900 worth of 46p stamps which were worth about £9,000 the next morning.soapy_jones said:

You don't send much mail then? :-) 1993 was the year royal Mail introduced self-adhesive stamps. Sierra Leone issued the first such stamp in 1964; it was die-cut into the shape of the country. (I've got a FDC somewhere from the era before I discovered girls. It's probably worth about 10p.) It seems that in hot and humid countries the old style water-based gum tended to just stick to whatever it came in contact with before the stamps ever got used: hence Sierra Leone being a pioneer.soapy_jones said:Imagine my surprise when I last bought a book of stamps and went to use the first one, I licked it before I realised it was the self adhesive type, YUK!!!!! The Sierra Leone stamp was printed in Walsall. Quite why it took the UK 30 years to catch up is a mystery.
Now, back to the train set.2 -
Two things worry me about this thread.
1) The Thread
2) I bothered to open it and read it.
