at the end of the year his colleagues got moves to MK Dons, Bolton, Orient, Walsall, Doncaster and one got a "big" move to Leicester...Dazzler21 said:
I would say his skills were even to those of his colleagues to be honest. I only saw 5 games of his and his effort and desire to win were far better than his skill.mrbligh said:

I'm just saying that it can't be denied that Poyet was head and shoulders above nearly everyone else in the team, in terms of natural talent. He wouldn't relish playing alongside limited players for another season when there was a chance of playing alongside better, and in the prem.DeeBee said:
I don't get it? Are you implying someone that's played solidly for 3 seasons isn't very good or that Nego will play just as many games as Morro. Bit of a weird thing to sayboggzy said:He'll play prem games for them this season, while wistfully lamenting the fact that he's not playing Rochdale alongside the talents of Michael Morrison and Loic Negó.
However his effort was above that of others... not his skill.
I think the unnecessary hatred is clouding people's judgement a bit. He was fecking class

Poyet was a first team starter who the club wanted to keep, the rest bit part players who the club wanted to let go
you cant compare them0 -
He was better than most others in the side and was one of our best players. But he wasn't "fecking class". He was composed on the ball and hard in the tackle, but fecking class is Scott Parker, Chris Solly and Jonjo Shelvey level, when they clearly are a special talent and would be (and were) unreplaceable in terms of their talent. Getting a transfer to a top prem team is justifiable, but not one that will probably be clinging on to their premier league status again this season and being 4th or 5th choice in their position.Dazzler21 said:

For me, Diego Poyet looked a better player than Shelvey did with us. As far as teenage talents go, he's the best I've seen in a Charlton shirt. Very few players in the Championship with his composure and awareness on the ball.
We were all saying his incredible he was when he was with us, backed up by the match ratings on this site. We can't start trying to ease off on the praise of his ability just because he doesn't play for us anymore.
The guy is "fecking class" at Football, no doubt about it.10 -
Shelvey was better, Bowyer was better than them both6

And Parker was better than all three.Rothko said:Shelvey was better, Bowyer was better than them both
He burst through in the glory years.7 -
Hard to tell if he was better or not, he only played 20 games in a struggling side. Didn't score a goal and I only remember 1 assist.
Of course, that didn't stop Diego Charlie Big Potatoes from thinking he was better than Bowyer, Parker and Shelvey combined!2 -
Nowhere near the level any of them were with us in my opinion.Missed It said:Hard to tell if he was better or not, he only played 20 games in a struggling side. Didn't score a goal and I only remember 1 assist.

You're saying he's not that great but would say its justifiable for him to go to a top team where he'd be a lot further down the pecking order ..... They all find their level eventually and he's taken a step up the ladder , make him right even if he didn't wanna give us a £2m bunce and come out saying what a tough wrench it was to leave us ....kentaddick said:

Shelvey did it in League One, Bowyer did it in the mid 1990s.
@Missed It you may only remember 1 assist, but do you remember him winning Player of The Year, which the fans voted for? Must have done something...But of course, now he has left he wasn't that good anyway right?
Players we had 5-15 years ago aren't relevant anyway really - Poyet was our best player up until 2 months ago. Saying "Bowyer was better" means sod all, because all of those players left us within the space of about 2 years of regular first team football anyway, and it was years ago. Completely irrelevant.
I still think Poyet will go on to be better than both Shelvey and Bowyer by some stretch.0 -
He won POTY for a side that just about stayed up in the Championship, against limited opposition. If "he who shall not be named" or Dale 'The Compass' Stephens had stayed until the end of the season then they would probably have won it. If you look at the other candidates, it was like picking Miss World from an episode of Geordie Shore.6
-
I think Poyet was better in a Charlton shirt than Shelvey in the 20 games i saw him. Still doesnt detract from the fact i think he's a little dick now.3
-
I'm not saying he wasn't any good. I'm just saying the games played didn't really give me chance to judge him in comparison with the others. I only saw the home games, where he stood out amongst a struggling side on a really bad pitch.
I don't deny he is a decent player right now, strong in the tackle, good pace and energy, accurate passing (though not necessarily penetrating with a lot of it). He will go on to have a good career, sadly with another team.
You can't put him in the same frame as Bowyer, Parker and Shelvey who in my opinion had a bigger impact on the Charlton teams they played in. He wasn't here longer enough and couldn't wait to get out of here.0 -
I never saw much of Shelvey but it's hard, if not impossible, to compare different types of midfield players. Poyet, arguably, has the most potential as few players have that much time on the ball and even fewer at that age.
He will need to play in the right team just as Parker and Shelvey needed to be in the right team. He certainly had something special, although he didn't rip teams apart.
It will hinge on whether he gets a sharper edge to his game and can do it all at a higher level. However, he is certainly one heck of a talented player.2 -
wasn't included in the Sun dream team listings when I looked this morning1

Because he is a good player, but my point was you are saying he must of been great because other players moved to league 1 or league 2mrbligh said:

but they were players we did not want to keep, and Poyet had no contract, do u honestly think if he did he would of moved, the reason no-one else has moved to the prem is because we are not forced into selling them
and if you want to talk about players playing in the prem now, Marvin Sordell has just moved there, was he the 2nd best player at Charlton last season, no is the answer
and before someone has a go at me for "jumping down your throat" or something crap like that
the point I am making is yes he was a decent player for us, and yes he won player of the season,
but IMO he was not the best player(my vote went to Wilson) and its unfair to say he was clearly the best player because he is now playing in the prem0 -

I haven't once said he isn't good. I have said his energy, passion and work rate make him good.
He was better than pritch who was carried from non league to championship with the same traits before getting found out.
Difference being in 2-3 years Poyet will have improved (pritch is past being able to improve in the same leap required to play Premiership) enough to be premiership. Right now he is a high level championship quality player.0 -
Starting on the right of a 3 of a 4-2-3-1 formation, seems to be to forward for him0

no better than any of our players last year........LOL!!!!!
just admit it....2 -
My old man's a shit man
He smears the wall in shit
and when I left the Charlton
I began to play like it1 -
This isn't a sour grapes dig at him cos he's gone, but I wonder if he'd have won POTY if people wern't voting to try to somehow convince him he was "loved" at the club, rather than how much he contributed over the season?
He didn't get my vote on the basis of I don't think he played enough games..............4 -
He's blatantly a little bit blinding and he will go on to prove so in the prem.... it's not good, it sucks as we taught him all he flippin knows.... but it the truth....1
