"There's only one thing worse than being talked about and that's not being talked about" what I mean is that at least there are rumours about signing a €2m striker*. Whether it's Delort, Baheback or another striker from Europe, and whatever the final actual fee negotiated, it looks like the club are trying to land somebody valued at €1.5-2M because of the following:
Katrien Meire stated they were looking to sign two more players
We are in the top six - staying there is the challenge - starting Saturday at Brighton.
Tucudean may or may not be the answer but without him BP resorted to pushing Bikey upfront.
A trip to Wembley as a losing play off finalist is worth a couple of million - the club may wait until 2015-16 to make a big push but I've not seen any hesitancy in the club leadership to date.
There is an international break soon - the squad and coaching team will have a chance to regroup - if we don't sign a permanent deal then perhaps a loan or two?
The squad is much improved on six months ago when it would have been inconceivable to secure a single goal win and loss vs Derby County in the last seven days. But the squad is thin / susceptable to injuries and loss of form...

So whether more higher value players arrive now, in January or next summer, it looks like M. Duchatelet is steering a course towards the play-offs because the EPL media deal dwarfs anything available elsewhere in Europe, including the Jupiler league.

The transfer window only has a few days to go so let's see what happens? September has some decent looking games and I for one would love to see an even stronger squad take the field next month.

*the €2M is the approximate valuation of Vetokele (in spite of a reported €3m move) Buyens, Gudmundsson, Delort and Baheback ascribed by Transfermarkt... This maybe slightly inaccurate but it's a lot higher than the values of last year's squad, except for Sordell who is back in the Premier League. I tend to agree that this has no impact on real negotiations... There are far more sophisticated football player appraisal systems out there such as prozone and agents / clubs tend to know a ball park value for their clients - the whole point of citing transfermarkt is that it covers all European leagues - in this new era it is quite handy to be able to look up any player and get a rough idea of whether they are in the €2m band...or perhaps even beyond???

If (big if) the translation is correct it seems a British club is offering them a tie-up of some sort, maybe to join some sort of network maybe.

I never heard anything expressed as a "tablet of stone". More like " the figures in the press don't generally represent the reality of what's paid upfront." And that this an increasing trend in recent years (I.e.long after the years of Barnett and Robert Lee). In Lee's case there's also the question of whether we got upfront money, but only about half of what he was worth at the time, because we were desperate.

It seems to be public knowledge that JonJo is a different case to Jenkinson in this respect.

I don't see what Richard Murray would have to gain by giving us such insights if they were not true.

And I certainly don't believe that Brentford have €4m lying around to splash upfront on Andy Delort ( or anyone else) as was claimed and widely believed on here.

I was more poking fun at you for what you know I regard as your excessive reliance on what Richard Murray tells you, as in your comment that he had "educated" you and Henry re fees, as if he is some kind of oracle. It might be generally true, it isn't always, including at Charlton, and it's hardly an insight unique to RM anyway.

When I was comms director, PV and I established the principle (at least as far as you can establish anything in the arbitrary world of football) that we would use the headline price when announcing transfers and then disclose the detail later. I would describe something as a £2m deal rather than say we had paid £2m to flag this. Of course this broke down over time, not least because deals have got more complicated as clubs have learned to protect themselves or, if you like, those responsible have become more professional. And more recently we have had owners who see no value in sharing such information with fans, leading to nonsense like one poster's obsession with transfermarkt.

I doubt very much if Martin or Richard would have accepted for a moment in 1992 that they could have got more for Lee by structuring the deal differently. RM may have a different view now - he often does, it seems - but at the time they were vehement in arguing they had got the market price. Not only was I part of that conversation, especially with Martin, but I have recently reread all the contemporary material.

As it happens, I generally agree with your view on Delort.

But then with the exception of Jenkinson weren't tge fees at a lower level than we would have expected so the balance of a forced reduced fee was to receive the fee up front. The Tours case seems high fee, up front and club in trouble = unlikely sale

As above, the club argued very much to the contrary at the time. It can't have it both ways in respect of those deals. I expect Delort will move at whatever someone is willing to pay, which will be the market price, by definition. It's an imperfect market!
