David Whyte tribute applause at 10th minute, suggestion

  • Strikes me that the best compliment you could ever pay a well-regarded footballer is a minutes applause at the relevant minute with the chanting of their name.
Seems to say thank you as well being an act of remembrance.
  • Why not do both? Silence before the game with his picture up, then on the 10th we all start cheering his name and clapping?

Minutes silence (I think Watford fans would respect this) and a 10th minute tribute would be good.

I'd say silence would be more appropriate, but given some tools will start clapping and/or yelling, then I think applause on 10 is definitely the best way.

For sportsmen I think applause is appropriate

For remembrance day 100% it is not

10th minute applause and chant of David Whyte Whyte Whyte would be brilliant.
  • Normally I'd prefer silence. But David was a goalscorer and a crowd pleaser who no doubt cherished and strove for the roar of the Valley crowd. If he's looking down, I think he'd love to hear it one last time.

I would personally prefer a minutes silence pre game with pic of DW on the screen, but given some pratt will spoil it, a minutes applause.

Maybe we could do both? Minutes silence before the game and an applause and song on ten minutes.
  • The 10 minute applause is ok. But us in A Block will have to follow the lead of Covered End because we can't see the screen, the only downside of sitting in A Block.
  • Be great to have a montage of Whytey's goals on the screen before the match! Anyone know how we could ask to make this happen?

I'm happy to contact Iain Liddle tomorrow ( Comms Dept) to see what he thinks as he would probably be involved with the Big Screen pic/montage and the publicity around the tribute.

Do Lifers want me to try to get this off the ground ?

Apologies for not acting on this as we were at SL this morning where I heard that the Comms team were aware of the suggestions.

Looks like we're all singing from the same hymn sheet.

If in the 10th min all the cafc crowd give a rendition of David Whyte Whyte Whyte with applause, not only would this give a message to his family, but to our players now that you won't be forgotten when you wear the shirt with pride.

Might be a bit soon but it would be great if the family were there to hear this and see how much love the fans have for him.

For me it would be showing his goals on the screen during a minutes applause before the game and on ten minutes a proper chant of 'David Whyte, Whyte, Whyte'.
  • yes we'll sing in the 10th minute but might wake a few up in the west lower

Hope he gets a tribute before kick off. I like the idea of the 10 minute as well as tho, but if a goal was scored in the 10th minute, it might not happen.

I think it would be a good idea to invite at least one of his relatives so we can show them our appreciation

Went well once it got started, I got wrapped up on the game and wondered why people were standing up. Overall well done every one.

For those that didn't catch a glimpse, there was a tribute to David on the big screen, but with the worst luck in the world, there was a power failure three seconds into it. In a 90 minute game, that was the one minute it decided to fail!
Great tribute from the fans all the same and there were a large amount of David's family there today, as guests of the club, to see it. Well done all.

I missed that Olly, I just thought the blackout on the screen was planned. It seemed quite fitting.
  • Came across very clear on the stream - think the arab geezer said why - Watford clearly joining in. RIP David

Don't want to make a big thing of it, but was there any reason given why the players weren't wearing black armbands?

Thought it was poor form to be honest. Though todays players wouldn't know.Whitey, I'm sure they would respect the fact a fellow pro and good servant of the club died at just 43.

Did no one think of it, or.was a deliberate decision?

I was a bit disappointed all round. It's a difficult subject. It's not nice debating the significance of one person's passing away compared to another's, but I thought David Whyte warranted a bit more than just his face up on the screen during the game.
  • Agreed disappointed no black armbands, he really was loved by the fans and deserved a better send off.
