Racism at Charlton - Rio Ferdinand

I've been brown for over 40 years and I've heard loads of racist comments including when I was playing football as a kid, playing football as an adult and watching Charlton (even recently, sadly).Charltonparklane said:Incident probably didn't even happen, just filled another couple of paragraphs.
Been involved in my own football and kids football for over 30 years and barely heard a racist comment,
Think its a big myth and something that creates jobs through campaigns.

Ok, probably a rushed and non thought out comment, I apologise if it offends anyone which it clearly has (get a grip)Jints said:

However, In Kids (which is what RIo is Referencing as he would have been about 13/14 when on trial with us, maybe younger) football since 2004 up until 2013 I never heard a racist comment at training or on the pitch. Only racism I heard is the normal crap where parents still living in the 70s have call a kid Half Cast or the 'coloured' Lad
Is obivious its there from a very very small minority at football, but is overhyped to try and get these idiots to change their ways through campaigns. You have no hope changing these peoples ways who chant a football, doing Monkey noises etc, fortunately there is now a majority of people in modern day society who don't see this as the norm.
All these campaigns are fruitless if the Eufa and FIFA don't impose any proper sanctions to teams like Croatia and Spain who just let their fans get on with it,
TBH in recent years only racist comments ive heard have been against me. That comment is honestly not a wind up.

And the racist neanderthals that follow football always will, that's just their way of life that is passed through generations, sadly enough. As a whole it's getting better not worse though, which is a plus.1 -

I think the improvement in this area since the 70's and 80's shows that you can help change these people's perception of this sort of thing.Charltonparklane said:

Because, of course, someone marrying someone of a different race means that they couldn't possibly be racist at all...WayneK said:Henry- GH is so racist he married a Thai lady. You assume too much.
NOTE - In no way, shape or form am I accusing GH of being racist. I've seen how found he is of petrol and matches. For the same reason, I'd also like to point out that I'm not an Arsenal fan (though there is one at work I'd like burning...)

I agree but the minority left I don't think you will change regardless.wwaddickson said:

On that note Rios comments is from the 80s so didn't really need to be brought up imo.

Before the thread goes of at anymore of an angle I think we should all take a minute to remind ourselves that Rio Ferdinand is still and always will be a massive twat.25

It's way, way better these days. When I first started going to football in the 80s, UI woudl have been shocked not hearing any racist comments. Nowadays it's the other way round.
When I was at school, racism was just a part of everyday life. Pretty much all the kids would use racist words that woudl get them suispended or expelled these days.1 -

Ferdinand is an absolute bell, he must have picked up a couple of things off that kid though.

Can honestly say the same, I've been called a white bastard but I don't deem that to be racist, although I was slightly offended by being called a bastard when I'm in fact not.Charltonparklane said:Incident probably didn't even happen, just filled another couple of paragraphs.

As someone who has been going to Charlton for 30+ years I have seen racism first hand by our own fans. Quite a bit when we were at Selhurst but little since. The last i heard at any ground was from some girl about 10 years ago who was some skanky old bag who just about managed to get the words in a coherent order.
I dont doubt that there are instances of racism still at Charlton and that must be stamped out. I just NEVER hear it and the way that Ferdinand and others bang on about it being a cancer sweeping the game just doesnt add up for me. All this garbage about black managers too. The fact Paul Ince cant hold down a job is that he is a poor manager and nothing to do with his skin colour. Even SCP is a limited manager tactically and its ultimately the results that cost him his job.4 -
please don't imply that Racism isn't solely a white issue.Fiiiiiish said:Ferdinand is an absolute bell, he must have picked up a couple of things off that kid though.

This is in Vets football.
Weve had a black ref and a white ref and neither were interested.
guarantee it would hve been a 22 man brawl If I had the nerve to say anything derogatory via Racism.
I could go on but know the thread would be closed.
However in kids football, Ive heard nothing. either way in the past 10 years from U8 to U18

Yeah but it's no longer cool to be racist, why be racist when you can point and laugh at the other kids boots, phone, poor fifa skills, lack of designer coat, hairdo, car, mother, skintight jeans or even amount of followers on twitter and instagram?Charltonparklane said:

Credit due to both parties IMO. Ferdinand for reporting it quickly and the CAFC staff for dealing with it immediately. I'm sure the player who made the remark learned his lesson .3

I can't believe anyone has ever used the word honky...4

TBF John Cartwright is/was a freaking legend. Best coach I ever worked with by a country mile.NeedMoreGrass said:Credit due to both parties IMO. Ferdinand for reporting it quickly and the CAFC staff for dealing with it immediately. I'm sure the player who made the remark learned his lesson .

I got to know John Cartwright when he worked at Charlton and what Rio describes is entirely compatible with the John Cartwright I knew then. An absolute gentleman and an excellent excellent coach of young players. He had also worked at the FA and at Crystal Palace where he overlapped with Dario Gradi, and both of them at the time were in a minority of coaches of youngsters who would put performance before results.
Many times I was at a game at Sparrows Lane and elsewhere where you would hear a slightly weary JC yell 'pass it....PASS IT', as other coaches would yell 'get rid....get stuck in....run him'.
Rio went to Blackheath Bluecoat school I believe, a school that also produced the excellent Paul Elliott, Ferdinand was well know in football circles at that age and West Ham had a powerful scouting network and a ruthlessness in getting their players if they wanted them.0 -

I was called a 'honky c**t' for no reason by an eight year old kid on a tricycle in Homerton about ten years ago! :-D4
